Got a bad sound, a clunk, When releasing the clutch Options

I hear a clunk when I put my Celica in gear and let of the clutch. I just wanna hear if somebody got a quick dianose for this problem. It kinda sounds like when you release the clutch quickly. It happens more often when the car is cold. It can also happen if I let go of the throttle quickly. Could it be bad axels, motor mounts?

sounds like a motor mount to me. but that doesn't explain it happening only when the car is cold.

open the hood and have someone start the engine. see if the engine shakes excessively.

Pop the hood on the car, have somone or yourself outside watching the motor, have someone start the car, let it idle for a bit (2 or 3 minutes to let it warm up) then rev it alittle. From idle (1000rpm to say 5 or 6000rpm) one at a time, with breaks in between. Ull see the motor move (thats a give in.) but if it moves alot more then normal ull know. Also holding it at 3k will exagerate any movments.

other choice is to drop the motor out, and replace the rubber inserts in the motor mounts.

you should notice it shake at start-up too. my rear mount was bad, Dustin (Batman) had polyfilled mounts so he put in filled ones in the front and rear. you can fill them yourself or put inserts in

hmm, thats really low. mine went bad around 161,500... right after the tranny swap. but my theory is that it was already bad but the lighter weight and more movement of the manual tranny made it more noticeable.

you should see if you can get under the car and look at the mounts. you can always just put filled ones in or get inserts and see if it helps, if not at least you've ruled that out and can work from there... plus you'll have filled mounts

there are a few ways to check the mounts. One os to have someone start the car whan you are outside looking at the engine when it's starting. If there is a lot of shaking when the motor first starts, then it is probably the mounts. Also, when it is running at idle, rev the motor quickly from the throttle body and if you see a lot of movement from the engine....

Thanks for all the replies. I haven't been able to check the mounts yet, but I was out driving today and if i let go of the throttle fast at let's say 3000rpm I heard the clunk and the car makes a little hump. This happends in every gear. I tried starting the engine and look at it when i sat in the car, but I couldn't say that it shakes alot. I also tried to rev it a bit, but it didn't shake just move a bit.

Does it make any noise when you are turning? If it does, its the axles (CV joints).

sorry to hijack this but, Hurley, with ur rear mount, i had a look at mine today, and i can semi put my little finger through, i think that there is a tear right exactly on the mount in the pic, when i turn right i hear crunching noises, and i do experince the noise when i release the accelerator, however the cv joint has been checked and it's fine, the mechanic reckons it might be the steering rack, would anyone one what kind of problems or symptoms that it's a faulty unit? however it's not leaking any oils

watch the engine while someone else starts the car. when my rear mount was bad (that one in the pic) my engine shook violently and in a kind of circular motion rather than just back and forth like it should.

again, it can't hurt to just replace or fill the mounts. then if the problem still exists at least you've ruled out that. my strange noises turned out to be a combination of the rear mount and just a loose bolt on the control arm

when my car was making crunching noises while turning it was right after changing the suspension and the problem was that the top nut on that side was not tight enough

My rear motor mount made a clunking noise too once. I think it was one of the the nuts came off a bolt that held the motor mount to the crossmember and a bolt snapped off holding my exhaust down.

If you hear a rattling coming from the tranny when U engage or disengage then its your release bearing.

the type 1 clunk i hear is after i release my accelerator, there's sought of a jolt action thingy and u hear the clunk at the same time, whereas the second one is only when i turn right, i sometimes get the feeling i'm loosing traction when i turn right, like the car is leaning on one side, mind u the noise is actually getting louder

I got my mounts replaced. It was doing the EXACT same thing. One of the bolts kept coming off. Then after 2 times to get it fixed, both bolts came off. I heard the "clunk" when both bolts were off. When you let your car idle, does it shake alot? When both came off, it made that sound and was rattling like crazy. With one bolt off you dont feel it too much when the car is idling.

A way to check if its your mounts, the mechanic just opened the hood, revved the engine a few times and you can see. The engine will move WAAAYY too much if the mount is off.

Oh yeah, the guy told me its 80 or so for a motor mount. Think its cheaper though. He said no more than 80. But I'm pretty sure the dealer gets it for 40. I've seen a receipt. haha

hey guys, i may have found my metal on metal grinding noise, am i right in saying that this isn't normal
this image is on the right side of the car whereas the next image is on the left hand side, hence when i turn cause there is no rubber in between the spring and strut, causing the grinding noise
what do u guys think?
