rev matching Options

Revv matching i think thats what its called, it is when you get up to a certain rpm that you are able to shift gears without using your clutch pedal! my question is, is this technique bad? i mean when i shift it, there is no grinding of gears and it feels like a normal shift whether i'm using the clutch pedal or not.

as long as there is no grinding there is no damage being done...
while sometimes i find this technique to be slower when accelerating, its not a bad way to slow down and engine brake

how do you learn how to do that? I don't plan on doing it on a regular basis but i know my dad had to drive home one time after his clutch broke...

down shift naw dont think so, i just do it on the upshift, i learn it from a friend and basically there will be a certain rpm where it matches the transmission spedd thus being able to shift without clutch pedal!

i do this all the time on my gsxr, it's easy once you figure out how to do it.

however, i wouldn't recommend it on a car, just be quick on shifting and you'll be okay.

its a bad idea, you'll never get close enough and you'll just eat up your synchro's much faster than you should.

your bike has dog engeggement and stright cut gears m8.
thats how they do it at races with dogbox. its harder to rev macth with helical cut gears.

I always thought that rev matching is when you say downshift.. when you suck the clutch in you rev the engine and then let the clutch out at approx. the RPM that the downshift will land you at so that way it's a perfect match and you don't slip the clutch or jerk the engine..

Try double clutching.. that's real fun.. I did that for a while in my 5gc cuz 2nd gear synchro was messed and I couldn't downshift into it with out double clutching. (thank God for synchromesh)

you'll be making a post about "my car is grinding into some gears" sooner than later if you 'rev match' and shift without the clutch.

BUT... if you read the original post... he's not talking about rev matching... but shifting without the clutch. You can upshift without the clutch by rev matching quickly between shifts... but this isn't a practical way to downshift. What you're talking about is straight downshifting, which does require use of the clutch to insure proper transfer.

Seems to be no way to rev match quicker in up shifting than you could by using the clutch. When I've drag raced before, I don't let off the gas. You let off a little, but still keep your foot mostly down the intire time. That's the quickest I've found. You would have to have a super light flywheel to rev match going up. Even when I had my light flywheel, the rpms would not drop to were the next gear was between shifts, and this is when I was driving the Celica and letting off the gas between gears.
