Thats true. Narrow tires gives some better grip on snow and ice. They still are using some narrow spikes on the rally cars at snow and ice.

Narrow and skinnie tyres can easily grip and claw on the ice surface.Sometimes rally teams are using spikes on their tyres (it depends from the level of the snow).
