Sticking Clutch Pedal Options

Ok, every day when I've been sitting at lights or in traffic with my foot on the clutch pedal, I go to let off the pedal and it bites immediately (no play at all) and the pedal only moves upwards about an inch. If I put my foot under the pedal and lift slightly then it springs back the remaining 3 inches it normally travels. When driving and changing normally it doesn't stick, and the biting point is about an inch from fully depressed, its only after having it depressed for a short while, whilst in gear.

If I don't have it in gear and depress it for a while then release it never sticks down. Any ideas?

Is there any joints that I could lubricate that may free it off (inside the car or in the engine bay)

Check ur clutch master cylinder, that happen to me once and it was my seals were gone , also try bleeding the clutch maybe u got some air bubbles in there

I was hoping it wasn't that, but I cannot understand why it would stick in position then spring back when slightly lifted.

I thought there must be something getting stuck thats freeing itself when lifted slightly. Sureley if the seals have gone or there is air in it then it wouldn't stick, just fail to operate the clutch correctly.

Something is stopping the spring returning the pedal back to the top of travel occasionally.

It realy sounds like a master cylinder.

Same thing happened to me, and it only got worse, It started slowly dying when I stoped because the clutch was partialy in.

Personally I don't know too much about the clutch. I would assume that the clutch would have springs and also the pedal would have a spring.

I admit the seal may have gone which would explain the change in biting point, but it wouldn't explain why the pedal would stick down then spring back up once lifted slightly. If it were not sticking and the seal had gone then I would say the biting point would change but the pedal would just go back to normal once released.

yes theres a spring for your clutch pedal. if you really think thats what it is then get under there and check it. then at least if thats not the problem you can move on to bleeding and checking seals

It has happend to me. This seems to me a common problem with celicas.

im having the same problem right now with mine..... my clutch is out so im going to change it then see if anything changes after all my fluids are back in i guess ill check everything else while i do that just to make sure let me know what you do if you fix it

I am sure that the problem lies with the clutch master or slave cylinder. The spring is fine, since it actually comes back up. The clutch master and slave cylinders are NOT expensive, and changing them is NOT hard. If you know how to screw and unscrew things, and pour fluid into things, then you're good to go. just do a seearch on clutch master cylinder to see how to install. good luck!!

Okay, resuscitating this thread. My Celica has just started developing this same problem. vsideboy: what was the ultimate cause?

Most likely it's the master cylinder.

Sitting with your foot on the pedal puts extra pressure on the seals inside, and if they're on their way out they might stick.

Something is happening to my pedal today, drove to work about 25km fine, drove back fine, but went down the street at the pedal feels harder to push in? checked fluid levels all seems to look normal.
any help.
