About 6 months ago I ran over a curb in my 94 ST. There was a wobble in my front driver side tire that was so bad that the inside of my rib would rub my brake caliper. I took it to the shop and the guy told me that the bearing was bad. He replaced the bearing and told me that if the spindle was bent that the bearing would go out again pretty quickly. Sure enough, 3 months later the wobble is coming back. According to the shop I now need to change my spindle. Is the spindle part of the knuckle on 6G celicas? Ive been looking all over (via internet and repair manuals) for a how-to on changing a spindle and I cant find it. I think im just searching for the wrong thing. Anyone had to replace their spindle before? Any suggestions?

By spindle do you mean the brake spindle? That is just a cheap piece of metal that covers your rotors from rocks and such, its very thin.
I think what your referring to is the HUB. Its the piece that holds all your studs together and your wheel. If the HUB is worn out than no matter how many bearings you put in they will all get chewed up. Its best to take this to a mechanic and have them pound it out and put a new one back in. If you do it yourself without a Hydraulic press you might end up not pressing it in all the way and making it worst off. |

Hey I got the same problem i have replaced 3 times the hub bearing and this is the last time I'll do it, 1st time a guy called "mechanic" did it without a hydraulic press so . . .
2nd time i replace the hub 2 weeks later i had the noise again 3rd time i replace again the hub bearring, because i didnt take time to search on the internet but now I NEED A SPINDLE DRIVER'S SIDE W/ABS if anyone knows about this part please let me know, It's not a big deal to change the spindle you can do it yourself |

you have to order it from the dealership...

the spindle is the entire thing that attches to the strut and to the lower suspension arm. This includes the hub and bearing. You should be able to get them at a toyota wrecker for less than 100.00 before shipping. I got one from TAP a few years back for 75.00 out the door.

that happened to me before and that was because i overtorque my axle nuts too much. You probably want to make sure its torque correctly.

Your hub is more likely to be damaged than your knuckle.
You probably bent/warped the hub shaft when you hit. Double check with the mechanic which is bad. You should be able to get the hub separate from the knuckle, though I'm not positive. Regardless, you will need someone to press in the new bearing, and press out the old one if it's just the hub. -------------------- |

I just had the HUB and bearings replaced in the driver side front of my car and my ABS light was coming on too, he said it was because of the bearing. The mechanic at the toyota dealership where i had it all fixed said it was the worst he had ever seen in his life.
and about 3 weeks befor all this went wrong i just got the CV joints replaced aswell. so i havent been very happy with my car lately, but now that its fixed and clean i like it again. -------------------- no money = no mods no mods = no speed no speed = no tickets no tickets = more money more money = more mods... |

The bearing is totally unrelated to the ABS.
The ONLY way it would effect it is if it was damaged so badly it noticeably slowed down that particular wheel. What probably happened is either they damaged the sensor, or the metal ring on the inside of the knuckle wasn't secured properly when they finished and is loose or not in the right position. Regardless, I would have them fix that. Otherwise you run the risk of the ABS coming on when it's not supposed to. Or not working at all.... -------------------- |

If the bearing was so badly worn then the ABS could be affected as the distance between the sensor and the reluctor ring would vary, hence giving an abnormal reading.

That's true.
He did say it was really bad... Did the CEL come on before or after the bearing was replaced? If it was before, I hope they reset it. -------------------- |

Well i never really found out what the problem was but i got it fixed. My car doesnt have ABS so i didnt have to worry about that thanks goodness. The mechanic that put the new bearings in the first time said that if the bearings went bad againt then i had bent the spindle (knuckle). I also had a front end alignment at the time. I think he screwed me because he would have known if anything was bent when he tried the alignment. All the numbers would have been off and he would have had a hard time lining it up. Also when I had the bearings put in the mechanic said that i he also had to have the hub machined because i had driven so long with the bad bearings that i had scarred the inside of the hub. I dont know if i actually bent the knuckle or the hub or maybe the machine shop screwed up my hub when they machined it out and it caused my bearings to go bad again. Anyways I got a knuckle with hub attached from a national used parts locator for $160 and replaced it all myself. Hopefully that solved my problems. Thanks for the input guys!

I wouldn't recommend a machined hub... They can't add metal that has been removed. And you can't get bearings in undersizes. If you had a damaged knuckle it most likely wouldn't show on an alignment rack. It's the internal cylinder where the bearing is pressed into that would most likely be the cause. Only if the whole knuckle was warped would it show. And even then it it would just show as an out of spec. If it only effected your toe, you most likely wouldn't know, because that is adjusted by the tie rods. I hope that made some sense, I've been typing for a while. -------------------- |
