Hi

I had my Celica GT for around 2 months now, one of the forst things i wanted to do with it is get the cam belt changed as it was last done at 40000, its now on 89000. also got a few oil leaks repaired, the bill ended up being rather large!

I was wondering if you need to wear in new cam belts a bit as my car seems to be making a whining noise since i got it back, the car feels fine its just the noise is a little disconcerting. so now im getting a bit paranoid that the garage didnt do it properly! is there much chance that a mechanic could mess a job like this up?

What kind of whining noise is it? Does it sound like a whining noise that is on the whole time the car is on? Or is it a high pitched squeal? If it's a loud whining noise, then more then likely it's your waterpump that needs replacing. If it's a high pitched squeal, then you will need to adjust your drive belts.

its not that loud when first using the, hardly noticeable, it gets louder as time goes on and then gets more noticable pulling away than at higher speeds. its not really high pitched, hard to explain its just a mechanical sounding whining that varies depending on the speed of the car.

From what you're describing, it sounds like they tensioned the timing belt too tight. I would take it back to them and ask them to take a look at it.

sorry to jack your thread a little, but...
is it possible to tell if your timing belt has been replaced or not, i dont have any records and i just bought it with 96k

Sometimes there is a sticker on the timing belt cover that says when it was replaced. There's no way to tell just by looking at it, a 200k mile timing belt can look brand new if the cover has never been removed and it hasn't had any problems.

I get a whining noise over my engine in 2nd gear at about 2000 rpm and it carries throughout all the gears until 5th. It kind of sounds like a supercharger.

thats kind of how mine sounds, it doesnt sound particularly bad, it just sounds different to how it did before. i remember the sound faintly before, it just seems a lot more pronounced now.

i popped the bonnet and listened to the engine and got even more paranoid as i heard clicking and a loud hum noise, it also sounds like a belt is scraping somewhere. the problem is i got no idea what i am listening to, the whole engine sounds bad to me now. i just wish i could listen and know what the noises mean!

not the whining sound, thats while driving, its more pronounced at lower speeds in the lower gears, at higher speeds its hard to notice.

i got a rapid clicking sound too at idle and when driving, its somewhat faint, i dont know if it pertains to this but ive allways wondered about it (i dont think it is anything tho) kindasad.gif

DUDE, i get like a crazy clicking noise every time I am about to shift. Some times I would just keep my rpm up without shifting then it goes away. Its not at idle though. I think the Chilton manual says something about the valve cover don't remember.

I told you already. The timing belt is too tight. What you're describing is EXACTLY what happens when a timing belt has been installed too tight.

I told you already. The timing belt is too tight. What you're describing is EXACTLY what happens when a timing belt has been installed too tight.

I second this. Also they could have overtightened the drive belts (alternator and power steering). The clicking could be caused by parts of the belt contacting various pulleys.

yes. its very possible they could have messed up a job like that... or any job for that matter. theres only 3 people I trust completely to work on my car and none of them are mechanics by profession. I know mechanics, I work with them almost everyday, and it only elevates my previous insecurities about bringing my car to a general mechanic. I would only trust a mechanic that I know personally or one who specializes in Toyota's specifically.

that being said, bring it back to them and have them fix it. then, if you don't intend to do it yourself, find another mechanic for jobs like that

When I replaced my timing belt and tensioner, I noticed the same noise; but it went away after a few months and I haven't heard it since. The belt tension is supposed to be set by the tensioner spring, so it is not likely that the belt is too tight unless they intentionally forced the tensioner while tightening the holding screw. The multi-rib accessory belts do not have a spring tensioner, so it is easy to over tighten those.

I guess i need to take it back and make sure, very annoying though as they had it for over a week waiting for parts, now i got to leave it with them again.

Problem is I'm starting to get used to it now and am wondering if its my over reaction! over around 30 to 35mph i cant really hear it unless i change down gears, would you still suggest its a bad sign?

damn, i have the same problem
first of all, the timing belt was a tooth off, now it looks like it's too tight according the whining sound

any advice how to get it loose a bit please?
