Ok guys, I'm new to this site, new to the mod world, and have only had my 95 celica st for about 2weeks now. First off, hello to all and I love the pics in everybody's post and watching stuff move along piece by piece and seeing my options.
Ok. Here's my problem. I bought the car as-is. I know it was in a wreck before and air bags were deployed. It has been redone and is a great driving car and looks like new for the most part. My airbag light is on. I don't want to go to the toyota dealer just to pay $80 for a diagnostic and them not even do anything. I am gonna try the blinking light, jumping t1 to e1 or whatever it is to see if it's throwing any codes. First question is, will this let me know the problem to my issue? What may be my issue that the air bag light is on?(it's been on since I bought it) And whether it tells me or not, how can I reset the air bag light without dumping out a huge sum of cash for something I could potentially do myself? Thanks in advance guys and keep up the great work. -------------------- |

The airbag system is tied into its own control box (computer). It could be anything in between there. Hopefully codes can tell you something, otherwise it could be an expensive fix.

Ok, I finally got around to checking the codes with the paperclip, but no code cause when I connected TE1 and E1 and turned the ignition to on or whatever, I just got a steady stream of blinks....... so, anyone have any ideas on what might be my issue?
Also, I got my car from a dealer and there was no stereo in it... They finally got one put in at a local "stereo installation shop" ...... before they put it in my dash lights were fine...... now the gauges don't light up, the gauges work, and the damn air bag light is still illuminated in that annoying red and all the other lights work on the dash(ie.... highbeam light, seat belt light, and so on....) The thing is, I haven't driven at night til last night since they put it in and that was like a 2 weeks ago so they are gonna say it's not their problem.... so I checked the fuses, all still working fine, pulled out the instrument panel and changed out the main bulbs, then all the others as well..... still not working........ what might be my problem with this issue, and how can I go about fixing it? Thanks for all your help guys -------------------- |

You don't jump TE1 and E1 for anything but engine codes.
All your other systems [ABS/airbag/CC] are checked by jumping Tc and E1. Disconnecting the battery will clear all but one code. I can't remember the # off the top of my head, but the way the system is set up when there is a problem a code is stored. Once the problem is fixed, the original code is cleared, but a "system malfunction" code is then set, and has to be cleared by grounding several pins. There is a tool that can be made to clear it with a switch, but I don't remember where the link is. -------------------- |

Check your instrument panel light dimmer. Mine went bad in my pickup (a toyota) and all the warning turn and everything lights worked fine but the guages didn't light up. For the air bag i have a few questions. Does your horn and cruise control work? Also for airbag codes you need to connect the jumper from TC to E1.

Thanks for the replies and heads up on the dimmer switch..... so, does that mean I just need to replace and that might fix my issue?
With the airbag light issue, my cruise control works and so does my horn. I'm going to go out and try the TC to E1 connection tonight. Do I just look for blinks on the check engine light as well or is there something else I need to be looking for? Thanks again. -------------------- |

Ok, with my diagnosis of TC to E1, the Cruise light blinked constantly....... the airbag light seemed like it paused before illuminating, then blinked 1 time, then pause, then blinked 5 times....... so where do I find these diag codes and if I need to call like autozone or whatever to find out, how do I explain it to them so they will know it's different than the regular type(TC to E1, not TE1 to E1)?
Thanks -------------------- |

Theres no reason why they should have removed your gauges out to install the stereo but the might have done and not plugged one of the cables back in properly.
The cluster has 3 different plugs on the back so one of these could be loose or damaged (never know when numptys work on your car what they get upto! AND they're not always as careful at removing stuff than you would be yourself!) OR could it be that the airbag isn't plugged in right maybe? |

Thanks for the manual on the airbags....... I don't really care about inspection, I could get a frame in a junkyard inspected lol...... this should be fun lol..........
Code 15 Open +S or -S circuit between front air bag sensor and center air bag sensor; short to battery voltage in +S circuit between front air bag sensor and center air bag sensor; faulty front air bag sensor; faulty electrical connection detection mechanism in front air bag sensor connector; faulty center air bag sensor. Looks like i've got a little work to do with the air bags lol....... well at least now i know what it is I don't think they messed with the gauges when they put in the radio(which i knew i should've just told the guy no, and put it in myself, oh well) plus i've already taken the instrument panel out, replaced every bulb(had a thought that possibly i had one of the few cars that works like christmas lights, one goes out on the same circuit, they all go out..... but that was just a semi pissed, overcompensating time), and unplugged and then replugged the hookups in the back of the panel. So even if they did, that's not my problem. -------------------- |

I know pretty much nothing about air bags and the ins and outs about them, when I clear the codes, how would I go about fixing this issue? Would I just clear the codes and then replace the sensor, or is there no need to really replace it and all that is wrong is they never reset the light?
Thanks -------------------- |

clear the code and see if it comes back. If it does, then you have a prob.

Failing everything else, get an aftermarket steering wheel, bin the original one with the airbag, bin the airbag light and plan on never crashing!!

Well for sure you need to disconnect the airbags so that the system won't just set it off at any time. If one of the front sensors is dammaged then if you have to brake hard then the airbag could go off. Here are some troubleshooting guidelines.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e362/bin...h/Airbag15a.jpg http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e362/bin...h/Airbag15b.jpg http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e362/bindertch/Fig13.jpg http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e362/bindertch/Fig15.jpg To clear the codes connect a jumper to TC and a separate one to AB. Then apply ground to each TC then AB then TC then AB for 1/2 to 1 1/2 seconds, lastly holding ground on TC till the airbag light blinks rapidly saying the codes are cleared. The ring also has the wiring for the horn and cruise control.
If it was missing neither would work. He most likely either has an actual problem or they never cleared the codes from the accident. I would clear it and see if it comes back. If there is a problem it will most likely come back right away. If not, you'll be all set. -------------------- |

sorry to steal the thread for a short time, but i never seen so many answers in my life...i have had the same problem where i accidently unplug the yellow adapter located in the back of my glove department because i needed to do some adjustments, it was that yellow cord with the male and female adapters that i unplug, which caused my air bag sensory light lit up ever since then on my cluster. I plugged it back in tightly, but still no change in the cluster...I try pulling off the terminals (both neg and pos, then one of each) for the battery connection, but no good....i will try that TC to E1 thing, and hopefully i get something, but would someone here who has the file for the diagnostic test please send me the info so i can resolve this problem...greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!
