Here is what i want to do to get this car running like new ( cough ) well , not exaclty new but as clsoe as possible. i know alot on paper but i havent done much with my hands so i will need some guidance and tips !

1- my car has the notorious start and immediatly die problem , which i been told is the idle air control valve , i need to clean it , i know how to so far .. my questions reagarding this are :
- do i have to replace any seals/ gaskets during the process ? if yes then what should i be buying ?
- how do i take off my throttle cable ( with the spring ) , any special care during taking it off , putting it back on ?

2- the engine runs rough , have no clue why ! ... any ideas ?

3- i think this car have been neglected before i baught it ( 4 months ago ) and i think i need a new PCV valve , how do i go about change that ? how much do they cost ?

4- my idle drops with a/c on ... only thing that i can think of is the VSV responsible for that .. how do i diagnose /fix this ?

5- my fuel filter is probably ages old , i hear its an easy thing to do ... just tell me how to exactly ..

6- non engine , but i need to clean my fan blower , read threads and stuff but nothing is detialed about how to take off the glove compartment .

thanks everybody !! i hope i can get this car running right !

I have never took out the IAC on a celica before but you would have to take the throttle body off it should be located on the bottom of the TB. Might want to clean your TB with carb cleaner too and use a tooth brush. I don't think your start and die problem is your IAC could be fuel system related like clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump most likely your not getting fuel to the motor.

2- the engine runs rough , have no clue why ! ... any ideas ?

umm...be more specific runs rough as in idles high ?? Or do you mean bogs ??

PCV valve part no.1220474020 I got it $13.43 shipped from 1st toyota thats for 5sfe dunno if ST is the same, its very easy to change the pcv valve If you have a chilton/haynes repair manual they should show you how to change one. If you don't have one I'll try to get a pic to show you. wink.gif

4- my idle drops with a/c on ... only thing that i can think of is the VSV responsible for that .. how do i diagnose /fix this ?

Its normal for your idle to drop with the a/c on as it does drain alot of your batt plus eat more gas. smile.gif

5- my fuel filter is probably ages old , i hear its an easy thing to do ... just tell me how to exactly ..

Fuel filter for a 5sfe is located on your drivers side under your air intake its bolted on your chassis it's black and looks like a small tea cup.

Never cleaned the fan blower never needed too. smile.gif

I recommend getting a chilton or haynes manual it'll make it alot easier for you. smile.gif

i baught a hanes manual today , so that got my fuel filter covered , i looked in the maintenance section and it didnt have the pcv valve replacment , apparently its too easy to put in there mad.gif , i cant explain how my car runs rough , i just feels really rough in idle and operation , rougher than my dad's 2000 camry that is. fan air smell like .... broekn leaves or soemthing i have no clue but whatever it is , it needs to be cleaned !! i havent hecked my hanes yet ...... for the iac , i read a whole bunch of threads about it and it worked for many people , i know the repair manual doesnt mention it but i guess they overlooked it ! i am pretty sure it is not a fuel delivery problem ... idle is NOT supposed to drop with the a/c and the car in dirve to the point that the car shakes realllyyyy hard and rpm is like 150 , it is supposed to raise when you turn your a/c on in order to deliver the power needed , and i think there is a vacum valve related to that.

SO far , i am waiting on my TB gasket to tackle this project one thing at a time ..

i digged into my manual and i found the blower motor how to , well it did mention tha vibration during acceleration , which i just called a rough engine , but be from my cv boots , the explanation looked tooo complicated though , so i dont know what to do !

edit : i just took my car for a drive on a newly paved road and it drove fine , no vibration, so now i am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with my cv joints woot.gif , tranny is still on the bad side , if the car is rolling at 5 mph and i gave it some gas , it feels like it slips .. i will try and use some sort of additive ... i am kind of feeling that my hard to start car have someting to do with oil leakinginto the combuston chamber from bad piston rings or vlave gasket or whatever , thas also something beyond my abilities

IAC is located on the bottom the tb. You need to remove the tb (tb gasket needed), as for the throttle cable, there are 2 17 (IIRC) mm nuts located on each side of the throttle plate. Loosen them off and you should be able to wiggle the cable out of the plate.

A little drop is normal (~100rpm). If its dropping more than that it could be your a/c idle up controller. I THINK its the gray/metal box on your firewall, drivers side by the brake booster..

First start with cleaning your IAC. Then see what symptoms stay after that.
As for the tranny slipping. If your car was neglected and the fluid was never changed. If you had it changed then more than likely the clutches are bad. As the trans fluid gets old it lubricates them less and less and the friction wears off faster. If you then change the fluid the previous fluid was carrying some of that friction material and was keeping it from slipping. The new fluid doesn't have that friction so it now slips. I would reccomend that if this is the case to start looking for a replacement or a rebuilder. Better yet convert to a manual.

for the blower motor...easiest way to get at it, all you need is a screw driver, a 10mm socket, and an 8mm socket with a socket wrench. Take the glove box out, its like 6 screws, un screw the bottom bolt thats holding the re-enfrocement in place, swing it up out of the way, then use the 8 mill to un-do the 3 bolts holding it in place, swing it out, disconnect the wiring to it, and your done. It could be that its just dirty. I pulled mine out and cleaned it..and..uhh..well you can read..

OK , one more thing , my engien is missing at idle , my guess , something that has to do with the distributer cap or the rotor , i cant seem to even reach the second bolt ( the one underneath ) that holds the cap in place , any tipos or suggestion ?

1/4 inch swivel. It'll be a a lil 2-jointed peice that attaches to your socket and rachet/extension. If it moves too much, wrap the jointing area with tape.
