Hey all,
as some of you may know, shannon and jim (supershannon77) have a 3sgte swapped 6gc, that they bought from RJB on the forum.
They started off with a 91 auto GT, that they had a local shop install a "ebay special" turbo kit on. the shop installed the kit, and promptly blew the motor @ 5.5 psi.
shannon then had the shop source and install a 99 5s, and made ~147whp if I remember correctly, with the auto tranny, @ 5.5psi
They then blew said auto tranny. lol
So, IIRC, they sold the 5th gen to a friend, and bought RJBs car.
They have had a few problems with it, including a bad tranny, which Defgeph and I went down and replaced for them.
While i was down there, jims brother joe bought the old 5th gen back, with the blown tranny, and fresh 99 motor in it.
We disscussed diffrent options for it, including a manual tranny swap, but with the car having pre 93 electronics, and no knock sensor system, I convinced them the best thing to do would be to find a nice 6th gen chassis to swap the engine package into.
At that time, we also disscussed power goals, and to me, it seemed like Jim and Shannon were just looking for a streetable, everyday drivable car, with ~225 or so hp, to make the trip a bit more enjoyable wink.gif .
Where Joe, on the other had, is really looking to build a BEAST down the road, 350+whp ect.
Fast forward a few weeks, and browsing the FS section here on the board, I see a nice 95 with a blown motor. http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=49717&hl=
Bing, Bang, Boom, Jim and Joe are on it, and go put a deposit on the car.
We set everything up, and a few weeks later, Jim, Shannon, and Joe, load the 5th gen INTO the back of a uhaul truck, put the 6th gen on a car hauler attached to the back of said uhaul, and drove them up here.
here are some pics and discriptions of whats gone on since.

They arrive with the cars:
IPB Image

We get the 6th gen off the car carrier:
IPB Image

HOLY CRAP, they really DID stick the 5th gen in the back of the Uhaul!!!!!
IPB Image

this was NOT as easy as it looks:
IPB Image

mmmm yellow nology wires!! LMAO
IPB Image

With that done, the following morning we got right to work, and got the cars up and draining, and prepped to get the bad motor out:
IPB Image

IPB Image

Then we pulled the motor and tranny out of the 6th gen:

IPB Image

While we worked on that, Jeremey (alltracman78) had torn into the 5th gen:
IPB Image

IPB Image

We dropped the motor and tranny out the bottom:

IPB Image

The "Ebay Special" T3/4 57 trim, .50 A/R stamped on the housing. 150$ SHIPPED.

IPB Image

With both motors out, we started on getting things preped to go into the 6th gen.
Shannon had bought a walboro pump for the 5th gen, and had brought it over to the shop for them to install when they installed the turbo kit. this is what they got:

IPB Image

looks like the stocker to me rolleyes.gif gotta love the "professionals"...
Jeremey was nice enough to donate a walbro pump he had for the project:

This was theyre downpipe / B pipe:

IPB Image
just keep that in mind for future refrence wink.gif

once the little things were taken care of, we mounted the resurfaced flywheel :

IPB Image

and mounted the centerforce "dual friction" clutch:
exedy disk on one side:
IPB Image
IPB Image

and the "dual friction" part of the equation:
IPB Image

Once that was all set, we mounted the tranny and got it back on the hoist, ready to go back in the bay:

IPB Image

We gave the bay a super quick coat of black paint since theyre planning on painting the car another color down the road a bit:

IPB Image

Then dropped the motor in:

Once the motor was in, Jeff (defgeph) came up and fabricated and installed the 3" turbo back exhaust:

Once that was set, we fabricated and installed the oil filter relocation kit:

And got theyre HUGE FMIC and piping together. since everything came out of the 5th gen, things were close, but not quite perfect, so we had to make some modifications to the piping, but it all worked out:

IPB Image

The new HKS SSQV:

YUMMY!

Dustin Did his thing on the gauges and SAFC Neo install with steffs help, and we did a sweet battery relocation setup for them:

IPB Image

I need to get more pics of that setup, it really is super clean.

the gauges:

IPB Image

With everything installed, we preped for the dyno

IPB Image

With a little bit of street driving, i slowly turned the boost up to 11psi, and man, it felt GOOD.

We hit the dyno anticipating good results, and to say the least, were MORE than happy!!

Heres theyre mod list, dyno sheet, and vid of the run:
Stock unopened 99 5sfe
460cc rx7 injectors
3sgte exhaust manifold
ebay manifold adapter
ebay T3/4 57trim .50 a/r
tial wastegate (5.5psi spring)
open dump tube
3" turbo back mandrel bent stainless exhaust
HUGE fmic
2.5" stainless piping
HKS SSQV BOV
2 bar map sensor
SAFC neo
oil filter relocation w/ 10an stainless braided lines and fittings

This run is @ 11psi, pump fuel (93 octane) VS my stock 5s run from back in the day (yes, this is on the same dynojet dyno):

IPB Image

yes, ladies and gentlemen, that is just about 240whp, and 270+ft lbs, at just 11 psi .
impressive, to say the least.

heres a vid:

IPB Image

i also have the runfiles if anyone would like to view them.

ohh, one more pic, i made them a custom intake.

IPB Image
you 5sfte guys, take note, THIS IS HOW YOU SHOULD BE RUNNING YOUR PCV LINES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
from the valvec over to the intake, pre turbo, and the catch can would go inbetween, if you have one.
the PCV valve stays connected as normal.
if you look close, you can see the little nipple on the TB that the valve cover hose goes to, it isnt capped in this pic, but should be.

this car SMOKED like crazy before i installed this intake.
its GONE now.

hopfully within the next couple weeks, they will bring me up theyre body parts (404 sides, 404 rear, TRD wing and hiro front lip) and I will paint the car
as for color, I think it is going to be some form of black metallic.

nice manny. Do shannon and Jim still have the blue one with the hiro lip too?

also, what was the rough total cost of the build up??...it seems like it was a pretty good build and looks like a pretty solid setup with some good numbers behind it.

EDIT: Manny, whats wrong with Yellow Nology's?....i got yellow nology's on my car tongue.gif

i dont know exactly what they spent on parts for the 5th gen, but once the car got to me they spent another roughly 1100 on parts.
shannon or jim will have to total it all out for you guys.i know that with the cost of what the shop that did the work on the 5th gen cost them it was WAY too much total.
wink.gif
they still have the other car, joe actually owns this one, but will be basicly trading them straight up.

as for the nologys, lets just say i prefer OEM. wink.gif

Look at the first to pics Manny has no shirt on....NOW that is HAWT!!!

Anyway these guys have done an awesome job on this car. When I took it to the shopby me(for the original install) they werent as good with anything. Manny updated me with pics everyday he did the work fast bc he knows what he is doing. The only thing that held it back was ordering parts and shipping things to him. I can not thank them enough but all I wanna do is hear is and drive it!!

Nice work. Power looks great as well.

I do suggest sending your Chinese ebay turbo to Blaast Performance to have it rebuilt with Garrett parts. I would hate to see those fins sent through your intercooler. And yes, I have seen that result from those turbos.

thanks harold.
i've sugessed that very thing to shannon and jim and also discussed the option of just buying another, and haveing it rebuilt so that we will know it is 100% new, and to avoid downtime.

Any concerns about boost spikes?

boost holds on this car PERFECTLY, anywhere from 5.5psi to 11psi, which is the most i can run with this wastegate spring.

gas milage on any boosted car is totally dependant on your right foot.
the more you press it, the faster the needle goes down.
highway crusing with minimal boost, i can get close to 350-400 miles out of a tank of gas in my car.
racing, it can be ALOT less than that.
lol

my favorite quote from when i had my Supercharged IS

Friend: So how much fun is that car

Me: about 9MPG worth

so yeah everything is dependant on the go stick. but you can't have a fast car and never get into it. that wouldn't be any fun would it!

so.. 240whp on pump gas vs. your 235whp on race gas... why do you think it made more power than yours manny? obviously it's a different turbo, but could just the turbo, bigger intercooler, and slightly larger IC piping really make that difference? I know it's only 5 hp more, but yours was on race gas, your pump gas numebr was like 215 or so wasn't it? which would be 25 more hp... now that's a lot!

because its a bigger turbo.
bigger turbos will produce more power, at less boost, but with more lag as a side effect.

Are you/they plan to run that setup at 11 daily? Will internals last long?

i dont see a problem with them running @ this boost level for as long as they want to, as long as the turbo holds up.
ive been running my setup @ over 12psi for over 2 yrs now, over 30k miles.
as long as its tuned, and not knocking itself to peices, the internals are just fine in the 5sfe.
especially the newer (98+) blocks.
i would think nothing of driving this car, everyday, at this boost level.
i've pushed mine ALOT harder than this car will be.
now, going up from here, its all new ground.
who knows how much more it can take.
if it were my car, i would go back, with some race gas in there, and crank the boost up a few more psi, just to see if we've gotten to the limit of what the head can flow, hp wise.
dustins (batman722)car will be the one who tells the story on that one, once he gets his cams installed, and the turbo on a while after that.

I love these threads, great work guys smile.gif

To anyone that worked on the car, what did you use as ground connection for the ground wire to attach to from the battery. I want to move my battery but still cant find a descent spot to connect the ground wire to.

for the ground in the trunk, there are a bunch of bolts that you can gound to.
dustin hooked it into a bolt against the rear panel, behind the hatch plastic.

gawd i love it.... so how much did they spend doing all this?

well, since they bought me the turbo kit basicly prefabricated ( i just had to install it all to fit the 6gc, and make it reliable) its hard to give a price on everything.
since the car has been up here theyve spent ~2500 with paint and all, plus 500$ for the install of all the parts & motor.
i gave jim and shannon a great price on labor, cause they are good friends of mine.
after what they have been thru with the 5th gen they originally had and the shop that totally screwed them on the install back then, and the swapped car, i built this with the idea that they will be able to just DRIVE it, (other than your basic mantinence of course) with no worries, and am confident they will be able to do just that, for as long as the ebay turbo holds out, or till they decide to replace it, whatever comes first. wink.gif

no, not even close.
read the first post.
i dont feel like retyping the whole story.
lol.

thanks for all the kind words guys.
projects like this take time, planning and most importantly, MONEY.
there is just no getting around that fact, even with a 150$ turbo. hell, theyre oil filter relocation kit cost more than the turbo, hehe for that matter, so did the BOV. AND the battery relocation. even just the t-bolt clamps and couplers totalled more.
cheap, fast, reliable. pick any two.
IMO there are spots on this setup that you just HAVE to bite the bullet and spend the money on.

Did you use any sort of FPR for this or just straight pressure from the pump?

no FPR is required for this setup.
just a walbro pump, feeding the stock rail and FPR.

you dont NEED one, but its also not a bad idea to have one. all depends on what you're trying to do.

if your setup uses the same fuel mods as shannons (400+cc injectors, and a 2 bar map) you dont need one.
you could use one to raise base pressure a couple psi if your close to your fuel limit, to gain a little headroom, or vise versa, meaning you could use it to lower pressure a couple psi to compensate for injectors that are a bit too large.
other than that, or building a monster setup, i dont see a need for one on a 5sfte.

sorry to revive an old thread. just wondering if the turbo ever pooped out? also, were there any issues with hitting the radiator fan shroud? my turbo is pretty close to it already, I couldn't see how adding a 2 inch long adaptor would fit, unless the t3/t4 is smaller or shaped differently or something. one other thing, with the external wastegate being where it is, would it still be possible to leave the oil cooler in place, or is it necessary to relocate it?

the turbo is still going.
the turbo fits JUST barely. we had to trim the shroud to get the clamps and coupler on the outlet.
the oil cooler wont fit.

well, if your expecting me to say , "i stand by these cheap ebay turbos 100%" no. i've heard too many horror stories to ever say that.
however, like i told jim and shannon, if this turbo lasts more than a year, it was worth it.
if it decides to take a dump, and fail somehow, as long as it dont kill the motor, theyre cheap enough to replace.
i never ever recommend them just based on the history behind them, and the fact that if they DO fail catistrophicly, was it worth saving 500$ now, to have to replace an engine later?
you can buy a REAL garrett turbo, with a much better compressor/ exhaust combo for ~ 600$, right off the KO racing website.

you can buy a REAL garrett turbo, with a much better compressor/ exhaust combo for ~ 600$, right off the KO racing website.

Its statements like that, that remind me why the CT27 is such a rippoff. kindasad.gif

yea, but then again, you cant bolt on a garrett turbo.

Thats the only excuse they have for the price they charge. They make a pure killing on those things.
If they charged around 3-400$ for what is a turbo rebuild, they would sell them like hotcakes and still make a ton of money.

would it fit if you turned the CT26 to T3 adaptor around so the wastegate was on the other side, then vent the wastegate to atmosphere? also, who makes that downpipe or is it one that came with the ebay kit?

most typical rebuilds cost ~350-400$.
are they supossed to do all the CNC machine work they do on them for free?

How much did they charge you for your turbo? wink.gif
Their cost is probably about 200 bucks of parts and cnc work (if that). All they do is a standard rebuild and just put it on a cnc machine to bore out the exhaust side. At 400-500$ price point, they will still be making a 50% markup on the turbo, and sell about twice as many of them. As it stands right now, you have to give ats 1,000$ for a ct27, and hope they accept your core.

Garrett can build (not rebuild) a brand spaking new turbo for LESS then 500 bucks, sell it to KO, then they mark it up and sell it to you....and its STILL a good amount less then what ats charges for a rebuild, and you end up with a MUCH better turbo. On top of that, you still have your old turbo that you can sell for 1-200 bucks brining the cost down to about 400, for a BRAND NEW turbo.

The only excuse they have is that the ct27 is a direct bolt on, and the t3/t4 is not, but if you compare turbo's to turbo's, the ct27 is overpriced.

of course it is, its the only one of its kind.
lets move on, this is way off topic.

Jeff(defgeph) made that downpipe we did not use the one that came with the kit. The turbo is still doing fine...we didnt think it would last this long..maybe we got lucky idk.

shannons car is back up here, getting the following installed:
8psi wastegate spring
"devils own" WI kit
we are also going to be ordering a set of the colt cams, ground to suit the turbo setup they are running, and are going to hopfully be installing the 2nd bodykit they ordered (the first was REALLY bad.)

so i went about installing the larger wastegate spring.
let me tell ya, this was NO fun.
#1, with the crappy design of the turbo adapter, getting the wastegate off, without removing the whole turbo setup (turbo, manifold, and DP) as one peice first was impossible, so, i had to remove the wastegate cover with it still in the car.
now, ok no biggie, right?
no. i had to remove the alternator, and still had a hard time even getting a allen wrench in there to loosen the bolts.
the cover is under tension from the wastegate spring pushing on it, so you have to remove the bolts in a circular pattern so the housing dont get cocked.
getting it off wasnt too bad, but getting it back together took a while.
i ended up using a c-clamp to help hold the cover in place so i could get the bolts started, and worked it back in.
once that was done, i took it out for a ride, to see what it felt like as i turned up the boost.
anything over 12psi and you can really feel the knock on pump fuel, so we're currently working on getting the WI installed ASAP, then heading over to the dyno for some tuning.
i will drive the car a bit more once i install the WI, to see how it responds to more boost with that, and if all goes as planned, i will prolly throw in a 50/50 mix of race fuel and pump gas and head over to the dyno and turn the boost up to 14 or 15 psi and see if the car has anything left in it before the cams.
i am quite eager to see if it will continue to make power over the 240whp they made last time @ 11psi.
i feel like we are getting close to the limit of the stock head, and this round of dyno runs will let us know if that is true or not.
more to come soon!!

do you have compressor surge at low boost with this setup? I have the same turbo kit, near the same intercooler path and the bov is located at the same place and I have compressor surge... I'm using a Greddy type RS BOV. Let me know!

nope.
the lowest we ran it at was 5.5 psi. but that wasnt for long, we basicly turned up the boost to ~11psi right after everything was settled in.

i mean, you certainly not go into boost each time you ride your car. When you aren't boosting it, when you shift only at 3000 RPM, do you have compressor surge... This is my case, and because you have the same setup as me, I want to know. Can you take pics of your intercooler piping and how do you clock the turbo down... Mine is sitting on the slave cylinder bleeder and I cannot clock it more to the ground. This result in a 1/8 play between radiator and turbo output intercooler coupling.

Let me see some pics of how much your turbo is clocked to the ground.

Thanks

Sam

there is no compressor surge on this car at any time.
i do believe there are pics of how the turbo is mounted earlier in the thread.
the guys who built this setup for theyre old 5th gen welded on a 90* outlet onto the turbo.

::edit:: heres the best pic i have of it.

ok, thanks for the pics... I'll try to investigate my problem deeper. For now, I relocated the BOV right after the turbo outlet, before the FMIC, no change. I removed the intercooler because I though it could be pressure drop (I replaced it with a long tube), no changes. So, I bought a Synapse Synchronic BOV and I'm waiting on it. If the synapse BOV doesn't clear the problem, I'll clock the turbo on the upside and I'll run a direct tube from turbo to intake manifold with the BOV between them. Like this, I'll be sure that the pressure drop isn't the problem. If this doesn't work, this mean that my t3-t4 turbo is the problem... I'll wait my Synapse BOV.

Thanks

so, the car has been up here a while, i installed a devils own water injection kit, (running windshild washer fluid) and a larger wastegate spring. (8.5psi IIRC)

threw in a few gallons of race fuel for safety (about a 50/50 mix) and went over to the dyno this morning.

this is from the last time we were at the dyno, @ ~11.5psi.

we turned the boost up, and went for broke. 16.7psi handed us THIS:

yes, your reading right, thats 285+whp and just about 300ftlbs

simply put, the car feels REAL fast.

all this on a still unopened, 100% stock longblock.

who'd of thunk it??
