well, as the title says, my engine has been knocking recently. It only does it once in a while, not all the time. Mostly only on startups. however, it also does it when i come to a light, or stop sign...etc. Also when i come to a stop, my oil light flickers sometimes and my rpms drop to like 500 then rise to normal. I check my oil all the time and never let it get low. So i have no idea why it comes on, but the knocking is what's really scaring me. Does anyone know what can be checked to figure out the problem. However all this has been leading me to believe that my engine is on its way out. frown.gif
btw, i posted in here because its turbo'd, someone can move it into the engine forums if need be...any help/advice will be helpful.

i second that, killed two 5s's that way and once the bearing goes you can just scrap the motor cuz it'll take the crank with it

drain your oil, and look for shavings in it.

last time replaced the oil pan, there were tiny shavings in there...but i hadnt cleaned the pan since i bought it online so i thought they might have been flakes already in there. Cylinder wall im guessing?

could be cylinder walls but highly unlikely. metal shaving/ particals in the oil, is probally either your rod bearings or main bearings. although i had metal particals that were cuase by my turbo failing.

joes engine is in ok condition, it ran fine. i wouldnt turbo it, tho, it does have quite a bit of miles on it.
if you can afford to swap, go for it man, you know you have help if you need it.
then again, you can have a built bottom end done for ~ 2k if you really wanted to go that route.

if your looking for a low mile engine, call around asking for a 98+ celica or camry motor.
you'll pay more up front, but you'll get a better motor, with the metal headgasket.
dont rebuild the motor yourself if your planning on turboing again.
you'll regret it.
www.mtbuggies.com can do the whole shortblock for you, with forged pistons, 3s rods,( they machine the 5s crank rod journals to accept them, which eliminates the weak point in the 5s motors (rod bolts), ect., for ~2k.

alot of places online are stating that the 3sfe is the same as the 5sfe except for the motor mount position. i know this is not true though, whats some of the main differences between the 2, other than the displacement change...2.2 to 2.0l

DO NOT buy a 3sfe to replace the 5s.
less displacement, older motor, are just a couple of reasons why.
stay away from that ebay crap, justin.
