Was looking under the car today, and noticed my front pass wheel was splattered with what appeared to be mud. Upon further inspection it turned out to be grease of some sort (petroleum based smell).

That would be your axle.
Get a new one or change the boot. Just dont ignore the problem or you'll be stuck calling a tow truck soon.

Change those CV Boots as soon as you can or you'll be screwed by damaging the axles.

Before you replace the boot, check the outer clamp [if there's even a clamp on there].
It looks like the grease is coming from there and not a split boot.

I had a quick feel around the boot, but didn't wipe anything off yet to show where it was coming from. The boot seemed to be intact and not split anywhere, but I will wipe the grase off and double check. Where should the clamp be?

How would this have happened? I washed the car just before I put it away (and I spray out the inside of the wheels) so it must have happened on the way home from the car wash...

I'm aware things break down over time, but it seems odd that it happened on its final drive before it got parked for the cold...

The cracks can be very small and can mostlly be seen when you take it out. When i replaced my cv boots on my t-100 i just replaced the whole joint.

How do I change the boot/joint out? Is it a hard job? How would I know if the joint need to be changed aswell?

Is this what I should use? http://www.celicatech.com/imagearchive/bgb...afts%202.2L.pdf

EDIT:
So after doing a bit of searching it seems it would be easier to replace the entire axle shaft, rather than just the boot. By doing this, it should also ensure there isn't (or shouldn't be) any problems with the joint itself...Would an axle shaft include both halves (inner and outer).

My question now is which axle part would I need? The chassis is a 98 convertible, while the tranny is a E153. I'm not 100% sure what sort of axles are currently installed, but it should be E153 inner axles and st185 outers, with a custom spacer from Jamasco.

Would someone be able to tell me what exactly the inner and outer axles are, and where the inner becomes/joins with the outer. Is the inner axle the piece that goes from the transmission to just under the alt belt, has the spacer attached to it, and is attached to the centre driveshaft by 6 bolts. And is the outer the piece that is "angled" and goes from the inner to the steering knuckle?

Here is a link to pics of my spacer and axles as well as info from the PO regarding the actual axles in the car.

I wouldn't bother replacing the axle since you caught the issue early on.

All-trac boot kit for right hand side CV
P/N: 04438-20050

$34 from 1sttoyotaparts.com. That'll be the most cost effective fix unless you can get a boot repair kit from your local parts store cheaper.

I was most likely going to replace the entire axle regardless, as it has sat like that all winter, no doubt accumulating moisture within the boot, and replacing the entire axle is *almost* less work than just the boot itself. Plus I don't need to worry about the condition of the axle, shipping, customs, repacking the cv joints etc....

Unless there is something I am missing, where it would be better for me (cost of the parts aside) to just replace the boot itself. If that is the case, please post up (and why)

You can't just buy a new axle for this application. You need a hybrid axle of MR2 Turbo inners and ST185 outers. You'll have to disassemble both axles and re-combine them to make one new axle including the spacer from your old axle. IMHO that's a lot more work since you could just pull the axle shaft out of the hub and replace the boot without the need to remove the whole axle from the car. Much easier/cheaper.

Also can't you get those replacement boots from any auto parts store that have it cut in half with set screws to seal it back up. This enables you to change the boot and repack the grease without removing the axle from the hub or diffy.
You guys seen these things? Are there drawbacks [like they come apart on you or don't seal right etc.]?

EDIT: Here is what I'm talking about:
http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/09008...irInfoPages.htm
The picture sux as it doesn't show the split but it does talk about it and explain it better than I can.

^i'm with this opinion, looks like you don't even have a clamp there

Well I was wondering about the hybrid axle issue so I asked around in the F/I forum and was told that I could leave the inner w/ the spacer attached to the car. I would need to remove the outer where the 6 hex head bolts are and 3 bolts attaching it to the balljoint, and it would be a straight swap with a new reman st185 axle from there.
Please let me know if that is correct or not
http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=57036

When I get another day off I will jack the car up and clean as much grease out as I can. I am not sure about the clamp and have not had a chance to check. I noticed the grase other day as I was cleaning up, but didn't have much time to do anything so I just snapped a few pics and posted.

In the event that it is just a missing clamp, should I still need to worry about moisture inside the boot? I just don't want to take the easy way out and just change the boot, and find out in a month that my cv is bad and need to re-do it all over again...

unless the axle is making noise all you need to do is....
1. get a CV boot clamp
2. some axle grease
3. some gloves
4. some kind of pick

now, push the boot back from the part its on where the clamp is missing, look for any debris, drops of water, metal flakes. if there are none then pack it back up with some axle grease. dont pack it completely full, just abotu 1/3 to 1/2 or what looks like as much that came out. push the boot back, install the new clamp, clean it up nice and dry, and you should be good to go.
