I'll be porting/polishing my cyl-head and sending my cams out to webcams (294 grind)...here's some quick questions...

1) With the head work (no shaving or milling, just porting and polishing (combustion chamber and exhaust side) will I need stiffer springs for the cams?
2) What do I need to do for the stock valves? Replace or re-shim? I have no clue here.

Also, I checked out Jim Snoodgrass (he used only a 294 grind webcam and kept the stock exhaust cam, if I did that too...what would be the benefit vs. both, intake and exhaust 294's?????

Sorry for an old post guys but I was searching for info and couldn't find it. Here's my question:

This guy from Toyotanation forum stated this about webcams: "with a performance cam for the 5sfe you will lose your low end torque but gain not as much high end hp. i dont know much about the 3sge head swap but i think i heard you have to do some modding to the block to get it to fit and in the end it would be alot easier just to drop the 3sgte engine in."

Ignore the 3sge part, I not interested in that at all. I just want to know if the webcams do in fact cause a loss of lower end power??? I really hope not!

it depends on what grind you get for the cams.

I am getting the 101 grind which is the mild improvement throughout the rpm range. Not the aggressive set.

when he had the 294 grind, dustin loss maybe 5whp down low VS my motor when i was still na, and gained nearly 30whp and 30ftlbs at close to redline.
unless you get an agressive cam, no need for aftermarket springs.
you will need to recheck your clearances, and change out shims after you install the cams.

Alright, that's not too bad (5whp) in the lower end and I like the 30 whp gain in top end.

Do you think it would be better if I were to put my stock manifold back on in place of my current header if I ported and polished the stock manifold?

Everyone I keep talking to about the header vs stock mani say the stock mani provides more torque than the header. With the cams installed, would the header be better or my stock manifold (ported and polished)?

Thanks for the reply!

i would keep the header, dustins dyno was with a header.

"294"
valve lift = .322
duration = 246*
"101"
lift = .350
duration 250*
(according to webcams, the 101 grind requires performance springs)
i would stick with the 294 grind unless your really going for an expensive build n/a.

OK, I guess I made a mistake then, I got the mild set (thought it was the 101 grind), not the aggressive ones because the sales rep told me I would be able to bolt them in without any other mods. Less, the shims like you mentioned.
