newcelica.org ....should have alot of info you are looking for. From what I've heard the trannys on the 00-01' weren't very good, but I don't know of any other problems they have other than regular wear that comes with age/driving habbits.(well, with exception to the fact it's a 7th gen wink.gif )jk.

tbh, if I were to upgrade from the celica, it wouldn't be to another celica (except a GT-4)...but I'd look into more options as well...what's your price range?

Arguably, the best model years for the 7th gen celica is 00-01s.

00's lift engagement at 6200 RPMs to a redline at 8350rpm. Early 00's came from the factory with lift at 6000rpm.

01's were the same as 00's but with revised shift gates.

02's had their redline reduced to 7800rpm.

03's had their redline returned to 8350rpm, but were converted to drive by wire throttle instead of cable driven throttle.

04's were the same as the 03's.

05's had their redline reduced back to 7800rpm.

00-01 are the fastest, but 03-05 has a much better looking interior and have avaliable factory hid as an option. Also on the earlier model years, if the previous owner redlined the car often, the "lift" bolts would prematurely wear out and/or break. The design of the lift bolts were revised in later model years and do not suffer from the concentrated wear on these bolts. The bolts themselves are dirt cheap and it's a good idea to change them just in case and start with a fresh pair of revised design bolts. Also the early models came with plastic sunroofs that would fade very badly. The later models came with heavier glass sunroofs.

hey man after i sold my 96 GT i picked up a 01 GTS manual with TRD bodykit for 9500 and ive gotta say its a pretty sweet car. newcelica.org is the best place to learn about the 7th gen. wish i was able to have both cars but oh well its a good car overall.

I thought there was a sweet spot year [so to speak] but from Hellsyphon's rundown it doesn't look like there was. I know a BUNCH of 7th gen drivers and they are much quicker cars stock for stock [Except the autos which are undeniably slow] the only thing I'll caution you on is engine duarability - no matter what anyone says they definetely don't stand up to prolonged abuse as long as the 7A and 5S can [pretty much universal with tuned engines like that tho]. A few of my friends are currently on their 3 engine on an early '00 GT [Now with 2ZZ-GE since the last engine/tranny cave-in] and an '04 GTS - all with right around 100K and on their 3rd engine? - not good [Note: These two are total racehounds and redline often]. But then I have other friends who just show their cars and rarely race them and their cars are every bit as reliable as ours.
I'd say get a '00-'01 be sure the lift bolts have been recalled [Toyota will still do this for free if you are on stock lift bolts] and try not to hit redline [They throw "random misfire" codes up there that seem to corolate with the engine failures - perhaps that's why Toyota twice reduced their redline]
the aesthetics of the car is personal taste IMO. I think with the TRD kit they look every bit as good as our SS-III look [Nothing compares to GT4].
You and I ave talked about this via PM Sever - why not a 5th gen altrac? You can get a really nice one for what you have and do the maintenace and you have a very highly modable car with enormous potential.

I drive a 00 GT-S and I love being able to smoke almost every damned car on the road. LiFT is addicting. As far as the tranny is concerned...you need to learn the car and not miss shift and you will be fine. Also, you can't beat on the car until it's warmed up. Sometimes it's annoying like last week I keep getting paired us next to a Z3 with a dude that was going thru a midlife crisis in it....he kept looking at me....revving and speeding off... I had just gotten out of work so my motor was cold...at the 5th set of lights...I was good to go

:EDIT:
steve, you know streetracing gets threads closed around here.
stop it, we know your 7th gen is the fastest car in the world...
rolleyes.gif
give it a bit of a break..lmao

They are good cars. Toyota are the nuts and newcelica.org is 1/2 full of jackasses...that's why I'm still on here....that and I picked up a 6th gen winter beater!
Reason for edit: cause i can. haha
