exhaust problems, Failed WOF for being to loud Options

Hey all,

does any one know the stock dB rating for the 3sge?

New law has been passed in New Zealand here where any after market exhaust cannot be louder than stock without getting it certed.

Anyone else from NZ or elsewhere had similar problems. It appears it costs about $200 to get the check done but it cannot be said it will pass. Maximum level being 95 dB.

I am thinking of getting a different system put in and just put a silencer in it for WOF times.

Any recommendations? Its my birthday coming up so ill get the olds to help me out with it.

I am going to ring a few exhaust shops and see what they say but as we probably all know...trustworthy mechanics are hard to find.

Sorry to hear that but I know how you feel. I'm not in New Zealand but am in California and have been pulled over many times by cops stating my car is too loud....

Hey delusionz it appears it fits up to the fe motor not sure itll work on the 3sge. Went on to the TRD website and found the part numbers were for the fe motor.

k-weaver yea it does suck.

To be honest it is really loud in the cabin and sucks when doing long journeys so it will be better in that respect.

That system was for an fe.

Just went and saw Magoo Muffler and Brake, the guy quoted me $300 for piping from the bottom of the extractors to the back with a resonator and sports muffler and tip. He said its good a nice deep sound but quiet enough when cruising and wont restrict the motor anymore than this exhaust is. And they do a sound check.

Any thoughts on this. This is the same money i paid for a similar set up on my BMW 4 or 5 years ago.

Also for everyone in New Zealand with a loud exhaust. The Police now have the power to green sticker your car and give you 25 demerit points if they believe it to be too loud or driven in a loud manner.

Well went to magoo today. they fitted a new high flow muffler and another resonator, it is definitely quieter now and a lot smoother sound that doesnt make the ears bleed.


I am going to resit my WOF tomorrow so hopefully I will pass. Silly government. Apparently they want to make it so that everything non factory has to be certed including putting on a gear knob etc. I heard they want to base it on Queenland laws.

The stock exhaust system on a 3sge celica puts out 85dB, which is approximately 8.5 times quieter than the legal limit of 95dB, although I had heard they had lowered it to 90dB? Suffice it to say, with my stock exhaust I've never had a problem.

Yea they have reduced it further to 90 dB which is a stupid level. Given that a stock commodore SS is 96 dB. I would also hate to guess what the old american muscle cars are if you owned one and had done a little bit of modification.

got my new one tested and it is now 88 dB but has a lot nicer sound than the caister, deeper and the induction noise can now be heard which is an amazing noise. I definitely shouldn't have problems passing WOFs or with the police. Also at 100kms it doesnt make your ears bleed like b4.

the old one tested out to be 100 dB. I still have if anyone wants to buy it. haha.

i reckon this db thing is stupid,not that i like loud cars with big bores,but i mean what about the harley davidsons? surely thats way to loud lol.

Thank your exhaust shop for putting on a resonator -- that little echo chamber is key to a smooth tone, and the lack thereof is why the typical idiot's exhaust produces that annoying buzz.
