Hey guys,
I just replaced my head yesterday and everything went well. The car started right up, but the timing is obviously off, I'm guessing the belt skipped some teeth at the bottom when we took the belt off of the cam gear. We have a manual but it only tells you how to replace it when you have one on, I'm looking for advice on how to replace it once it's been removed or "broken" as that's the type of situation we're in. There's nothing in the book here and we can't find a service manual online. So how to we align everything to put the belt on and have this run correctly? Thanks, Greg -------------------- |

Ok, I think I've got it narrowed down pretty well, we have the crank at 0 degrees TDC, and we just have to make sure that the distributor rotor is about to hit number 1, but as far as aligning the cam gear are we aiming to align the hole on the E or the U of the gear?

Had the same problem kept pulling distributor, checking cam setting checking crank pulley. I just couldn't figure it out. The book didn't help I did accomplish a lvl of frustration I never had before. I thought I worked it out took it to work and it lost power and started knocking. So I had a 97 engine put in it. It ran a few days lost power started knocking but idled just fine. So now its back at shop getting another motor put in it an I am even more frustrateed. I would suggest if you can't get advice from 6gc take it to a reputable toyo mech.

Ok, well, I have two sets of cams being that I have the ones that came with the new head. The are both the same except that the old cams from the new head don't have the U just the E. I suppose it can't really hurt to try lining everything up with the U instead...wow this is frustrating. Everything is where it should be. Except now I need to try the hole on the U instead. I plan to wait until tomorrow night or monday to change anything on it so please give me all of your feedback.
Thanks. Edit: Just to fill you all in, with everything lined up the way it should be using the E's guide hole on the cam pulley, the car runs at +15 base timing, which some people do on purpose but my engine sounds terrible. Sounds like a diesel and when you rev it a little there a slight knock. Mind you the only reason I replaced the head was to put one one that had better valve seals and hopefully get rid of a slightly noticeable rattle. It didn't have the diesel sound or the knock before the new head. This post has been edited by GTS13: Oct 30, 2008 - 9:48 PM -------------------- |
