insalled my gound control coilovers today. the front wasnt hard at all. the ginding that i was scared about is very miniscule compared to the amount of grinding one of my friends had to do on his 240sx.

when trying to do the back i ran into this problem.


*piece a*(real name slips my mind rignt now)-the one that connects the rear sway bar to the strut assemly had a rusty bolt in it and there was no way i'm getting it out. i'm still not sure what im going to do about this. if i need to cut it i will but i want to see how much it will cost to order this replacement piece from toyota first. i have a pic of the piece and some of my car just need to develop and then scan them. i will keep you updated on this.

also if anyone knows a good way to remove this piece(if you know what i'm talking about) let me know.

Are you talking about the bolt that requires an allen wrench to remove? One of mine was rusted, and it took us a lot of WD-40 and about half an hour to remove the bolt.

yes,

thats it. we tried using a allen to hold it and then turning with a wrench. but it seemes like the allen part was already stippped a lil. i was missing the closet size in metric though. we also worked wd40 into it fo about 20 min while attempting to get it lose. i will try that again with a good set of metric allen wrenches. any suggestions on better lubes than wd-40?

welcome to the club, 1 of mine was stuck on, the only way to get it off was a saws all, I replaced both of mine and greased em up before I put em on and now they go on and off no problem. This was apoor design alot of people have trouble with this. Get a penetrating oil wd40 will not help this situation. WD40 is not a lubricant. it is a water displacer

Yup I had the same problem with mine. We tried to get it off but couldn't. So we just left it on there and went about finishing the install by getting a portable grinder and just working on the housing while it was still linked to the car. It worked! Took more time, but we got the job done.

But once you do get that linkage off, I suggest getting a new one. Because it's probably already stirpped and could be dangerous if it is. smile.gif

That's what I was told when I took it to my friends uncles shop. That a lot of times when it becomes like that you risk damaging it even more trying to get it off. I took my car in after the install to get a realignment and he retightend that link after we told him we tried taking it off.

The sway bar linkages are crappy, i hates them alot. They need to be thicker, and more easily accessible. But like they said, you need a penetrating oil, not WD40. I think they cost something like 30-60 bucks for ONE tongue.gif

i too had she same problem. i got them loose ok but the one wouldnt tighten all the way back up. i went to the toyota dealer and its like 75 for each one. so i have been riding around with it loose. is that a bad idea?

yeah same thing happen to me when i change that back suspension... i couldn't get the bolt off, so i had to cut it off and buy a used one about $35 each and that helps. one thing i hate about putting coilover on is that you have to grindin off some of the stock and make the ring coilover fit into it to work. but i gotta it done.. but it alot easier if change them to spring.

it's not a good idea Nick, it can cause damage to the suspension components over time, and is also dangerous in a situation that calls for extreme handling, ie when you have to swerve
