Hi
Recently I have been hearing a noise from my car when its started up on cold. The temperature in England is about 2 Degree Centegrade recently. It goes away after the car gets warmed up. The car seems to related to the power steering. The sound changes when the wheel is turned slightly. It is quite loud sounding like a long chirp. Apart from this there is no other unexpected noises. It doesnt seem to be the engine as it seems fine when i rev it and its not linked to the noise. Anyone able to potentialy diagnose this? Much appreciated, Thanks |

Much appreciated, Thanks either the powersteering belt is loose, or more likely worn and in need of replacement. -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

oh ok, thanks,
is that checked in a major service? its due for one this week. if its loose, then how come the sound goes away after 20 minutes once the car is warmed up. Also what are the implications if it snaps? is it as serious a cambelt snapping? |

Also what are the implications if it snaps? is it as serious a cambelt snapping? the sound you hear is the belt slipping. as it warms the belt stops slipping. im sure they will do it if you mention it when you bring it in. if it snaps its not a huge deal, although you will loose power steering. lol -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

When my steering was chirping on cold starts (full lock of wheel for chirp though), i took it to a shop and they told me the PS pump was clogged and all the lines as well. So they flushed the fluid and lines and it worked like new again.. no chirp.. |

nor have i, power steering fluid is more or less transmission fluid without the dye (slightly different additive package so do not put it in your automatic trans!). it doesnt just 'crud up' and clog things without some external contamination.
more like....they saw a kid who would believe that. so they did drain and fill your fluid AND tightened the belt. after, was the fluid even new and clean? -------------------- |
