I downloaded Windows 7 on Friday and installed it on my 1.6Ghz Atom netbook with 2GB RAM, and I am impressed with the performance. It's running snappier than XP does, and so far, without problem.

Anyone else scoop up a license for the beta and take a look at it? I can't be the only one...

I grabbed it but have yet to install it.
How do you like that giant task bar on a tiny netbook?
Dont know if i will bother trying it on my 1000h, maybe my desktop.

i actually installed it last october when they had the beta beta version. it was REALLY bad. it hosed up everything and none of my drivers worked. i hate how theres a constant reminder in the lower right screen that its not a final copy but just a "trial version" and how it will automatically not work when august rolls around. im sticking with vista ultimate edition for another year until all their kinks are out.

my acer aspire one takes vista really well and everything works as it should so im leaving it the way it is =)

I actually just installed it. It rocks!
Very fast and snappy compared to vista, yet still has all the visual effects. I like it a lot. Might upgrade from xp to this when it finally comes out.

Forkee, whatever you were using last october was a pre release alpha, you really cant complain about alpha software that you were not supposed to have in the first place. This is the fist public beta, and it just came out on friday so the has been some development time since you last tried it.

tried downloading it but it looks like they've met the 2.5 million limit already..
i was really hoping to beta test this. i'm still currently using a beta test version of vista ultimate right now.

they lifted the 2.5mil limit on the 10th, so I don't know why you couldn't install/download.

Art - The larger task bar doesn't bother me as much as the large icon size. I only have four desktop icons (My Computer, Mozilla, Recycle bin, and my LinkStation NAS) and it goes from the top to the bottom(1024x600 res). I don't need icons that large, however that isn't enough of a problem for me to not use/purchase the new version

However when browsing the Internet I hit F11 and free up some screen real estate.

And on the performance gadget I have it shows at idle I'm consuming .06% CPU, and 30% of my RAM, which is less than when in XP.

My only gripe isn't even with Windows 7, but with Microsoft. The new OS is still running a Vista Kernel, and so it is a lot like Vista, but with much of the problems fixed (Cancel or Allow being one big one). This should truly be released as a patch to Vista, or a SPx, but instead Microsoft is going to sell it as a new OS. The only reason I can see doing that is because of the stigma that sits over Vista now.

yeah, i agree. there just aren't enough features to make it feel like a new os.

I'm confused. They did this same crap with Windows 2K and ME all at the same time. If I remember right, 2K was based on NT and ME was based on Win 95/98. What's the big selling point differentiating these two? So far I'm guessing it's just a better version of Vista? So far, no real problems with Vista here, but to run it on my desktop I upgraded to a quad core and I'm using 4 gigs of RAM since Vista is such a memory hog. Office 07? They can keep that crap...

I'm downloading it right now, could someone provide me with some screenshots so I have an idea of what I'm dealing with?

Also, am I going to have any conflicts with the programs I already use?

Do you like it overall? I'm trying to decide if it's worth ditching Vista for a few months.

Its a lot like vista, but more responsive and less of a resource hog, and it has a new task bar that is more osx like.

i like it a lot. it feels more fluid than vista is, and while it is still very user friendly to non-technical users, it doesnt make me feel like windows is holding my hand through configurating certain aspects - which is one reason i hate vista.

How is it with 32-bit programs? I know Vista and XP 64-bit versions have had some problems.

I'm thinking about swtiching once it comes out.

All of microsoft's apps (office and such) run great. I installed eathereal and that has been flawless, I have mozilla going as well. I haven't had a problem yet. It seems like its drivers and much of the os is cross-platform with xp.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/dd353205.aspx

asks for 16GB, but only holds about 8GB after you run disk cleanup
