I am trying to choose between a Mitzibishi FTO mivec or Celica SS3.
Ive taken the FTO for a test drive and found it very responsive and what a awesome sound! But was disapointed with how rough it felt on the road. I wana test drive a Celica SS3 to compare but cant find a yard in close proximity that has one..Questions: 1. whats the SS3 drive like? 2. has it got the kick of a mivec kickin in? 3. is it smoother to drive (than a FTO) 4. how much Hp does a stock SS3 produce(beams and non beams) 5.whats the power difference between SS2 and SS3 (of same year?) 6. for thoose that have driven a FTO mivec and the celica which do u prefer?? Please help meeee! Un biased comments would be good! |

there is the info for the 3s-ge engine which is the engine for the ss3 and ss2 I have a friend that is from australia and he says that the FTO's are really nice but they dont handle anywhere near as good as a celica. they ss3 beams has vvt-i and 197hp and the non beams only has 152 If I am not mistaken the FTO is a V6 so it will sound a little meaner but hks super dragger exhaust could fix that for the ss3. I would (also my friend from down under) recommend the ss3 beams because the horsepower is the same. lighter car, more reliable and better handling. |

toyota's answer to Honda's VTEC cars. they have 3sge engines and factory ground effects and some have different suspension and LSD. basically, the fasted 6th gen celicas aside from the GT4's the ss2 had a 170ish HP 3sge and the ss3 had the BEAMS VVTI 3sge with close to 200hp basically, its another instance of toyota screwing over the american market. -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

Actually, all SS-IIs and SS-IIIs have the same engine for any given year. In '98 and up models, both the SS-II and SS-III have the BEAMS 3S-GE. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

a very tough choice...The FTO has a great engine in it, being a very small V6 that puts out respectable power and is quite smooth. As far as the handling, CAR magazine (uk) said that its handling was second only to the integra type R for a front-wheel drive car, back in 2000. With that comes the rough ride. However, on the other hand, the celica has a much more sophisticated interior, better reliablity, and an awsome 4 cylinder. I suppose it all depends on if you are going to mod the car up or not. If you arent you probly would be best off getting the celica, seeing as it is a more complete package from the factory. If you are going to make your car faster, however, I'd choose the FTO, seeing as its V6 has awsome potential. Be aware though that nearly all of the FTO's with mivec came with mitsubishi's INVECS-II automatic transmission.

So a SS2 can have a beams motor too??? Im gonna get a dealer to order import from Japan 4 me. Does anyone know what would be a reasonable New Zealand price to pay for a 1998 SS3 import?. Do all SS3 have BEAMS motor?

Only SS-IIs and SS-IIIs from '98 and up have the BEAMS 3S-GE. The older models have the 177 horsepower version of the 3S-GE without variable valve timing. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

Hehe, I know the feeling. At least I'll have my AE101 4A-GE-powered Celica back soon, so I'll have part of a JDM car. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...
