I have been looking at these and wondering if I should go for it. They are backed with a year warranty and put out 160AMPS vs the standard Alternators that put out 70AMPS. I was thinking of getting it (if it seems like a good idea) and keeping mine as a back up just in case. What do you guys think? Has anyone bought one of these before?

One thing I was wondering is would your car be ok running with that many amps? ie blowing fuses or overpowering the electronics

Good point. I just;........... Ok, do your lights dim a bit when you are not accelerating and when you do step on it, they slightly light up? Or are you telling me I am going to have to check for voltage drop through out my whole car? I really don't want to.

High amp alt does not = crispy wires. pulling too many amps through a wire does. add a good sized fused wire between the alt and battery +s and check the volts/amps at idle && 2000 rpm (auto zone will do it free. just ask)

This a good way to go then? Or should I just rough it out the way it is? I mean I am not going high tech on system and lights, but I would like a healthy amount of such. You know? -------------------- 91 MR2 Turbo SW20, 92 MR2 Turbo SW20, 95 Celica GT ST204

Do a voltage drop test.
http://www.excelauto.com/online/Tech.d/altvdt.html If you find that you have any drop, beef up your alternator wire (search for the post i made about it) I used to have some pretty bad dimming problems. My voltage at idle would dip down to around 11v sometimes causing the lights to dim. I solved the problem by beefing up my alternator wire and rewiring my fuel pump onto its own circuit (you dont need to do the fp, if you are on a stock pump). Now the car idles at 14v in the daytime, and 13v at night with the heater going, HID headlights on, fog lights, etc... Also, the problem with these super high output alternators is that they still produce the same amount of amps at idle, as the stock one does. They only get up to 160amps at high rpm, so It really wouldn't solve your issue. If anything, you should get an 80amp alt for an automatic gt. Most car stereo shops sell them, and they can range in price.
Just an example of one. Usually caps with digital displays cost more. If you don't need the display, you can probably save a good chunk of change. -------------------- |

I'd also suggest a batcap. They help w/ voltage problems and will save your alternator. I have one batcap and running around 2k watts continuous in my celica and haven't had my lights flicker with batcap 800. And its relatively small.

its like a high performance BATTERY. it will supply voltage much quicker than a regular batter(similar to a cap.) and have much more "storage" than a regular cap. But of course more storage, less responsiveness. but u really don't have to worry about that much detail.
when shopping for your HO alt, ask the amperage the alt puts out at 800 rpm. i think stock can put our 30 amps at idle? im not sure, so someone back me up or correct me please. -------------------- QUOTE "And, as always, your friendship, help, and dedication to the advancement of Texas Celica dominance is GREATLY appreciated. I think the amps a stock alt for MT Celica puts out 70amps. The ones that put out 160 supposedly idle at 88amps. Well the specific one I was looking at. -------------------- 91 MR2 Turbo SW20, 92 MR2 Turbo SW20, 95 Celica GT ST204
