what are the signs of an oil pump that is failing?
If mine was going, would I have the same PSI at idle, 2000 rpm, 3000 rpm and at start up? Or would it change from day to day for example...my car starts up in the morning and reads 60 PSI, then after normal op. temp. it idles at 10 PSI, raises to 34 PSI at 2000 rpm, and 50 PSI at rpms at and above 3000 rpm. It stays within that range every day give or take a PSI. So am I good or are the numbers (PSI) concerning? I don't have rod knock (that I can hear), I don't have low oil levels, and I don't have any loss of power that I have noticed. I do have 179,000 miles on my bottom end though. If I did do a new oil pump, could I expect to see higher PSI levels? |

sounds about right, idle oil pressure is slightly on the low side. maybe try running 10w30 to see if the idle oil pressure comes up some.

Why would my idle oil pressure be on the low side though? Is there something I should be concerned about with that? Is there a way I can do some troubleshooting to find out why it would have low idle oil pressure? This post has been edited by 6G96GT: May 15, 2009 - 8:19 PM |

usually just the engine getting a little worn, as bearing clearances wear the oil pressure drops a little.

Those pressures are about right, depending on what oil you use. Why are you worried?
The oil pump is VERY unlikely to fail, unless you or a previous owner did something to cause that. The 5sfe oil pump is not likely to ever wear out, although the shaft seal and o-ring seal will likely start leaking with age. You can replace those when you change the timing belt. I just checked a 5sfe oil pump with 160k on it and it was within the NEW pump specs for clearances (wear). The seals were seeping slightly. I guess I just worry too much. I don't have an idiot light any more, just a mech. oil pressure gauge. My brother owned the car for 3 years before me and treated it very well. You guys have re-assured me...believe me!! Thanks!

I need it bc Im replacing head gasket and other stuff and mechanic recommended it. Thanks Edit: BTW i cant find it in 1sttoyotaparts. It just shows the pump as a whole This post has been edited by nics: May 25, 2009 - 1:31 AM -------------------- God made man....

Best bet on that is probably your local Toyota Dealership for the shaft seal and o-ring seal
