I always been wondering why they changed the engines in USA?. I dont recall if its the same 1.8 engine, But why did they make it 2.2 and only give it 130 hp?.

I meen, Why not just make the same engines everywhere, You should've had the 1.8 or 2.0 like in Japan and europa.

But there has always been difference on USA's models compared the Japan / EU models..

Is it to reduce prices?, Legal reasons?. Someone help biggrin.gif

I'm thinking a lot of cause of the emission not much safety. It was pretty easy for Toyota too cause the engines we got for the "Celica" were already offered in the Camry LE (2.2 5S-FE) & Corolla (1.8 7A-FE). The 3S-GTE was once offered here in the states for the 4-5th gen Celica's. Seeing that the 3rd gen 3S-GTE was more HP probably had worse emission standards than the 1 & 2nd gen 3S-GTE. I would guess the same would go for the 3S-GE as well. Also I heard too the US government limits the options and power to sway people to by American cars over foreign. I'm sure there is more to it though.

How can it be Emission?

Those V8's that most American's drive in is way worse than a 3sge or 3sgte engine when it comes to that

Cost. You cheapskates over there won't pay what us suckers pay for cars laugh.gif

When my car was new in 1994, it cost over £25,000, which is just under $40,000

i'm guessing the price was a LOT lower in the US.

1994 Celica GT was ~$20,000 depending on options.

And OP- the big "detroit muscle" cars back in the day were V8's because there really wasn't any emissions standards, and gas was stupid cheap.

But its funny to see that you think of us as a bunch of people driving around muscle cars getting 6mpg.

I just wish they would have brought the 3rd gen 3S-GE over here. That's all I want.

its a combination of costs and politics

other countries have more money to pay for better products (engines in this case).
believe me if when the celi came out and it had the option to get it with a 3sgte engine it would
add at least 6000 to 8000 more just for another engine.
in other countries it would of been a lot more.
If companies do that then they would have a loss in their current revenue. since on top of that they would
have to add cost of repairs, costs of transportation, and so on just to ship and maintain engines to middle or lower class countries.
its all business right here, the world revolves around it guys.
we should all know this by the time. i am graduating with an associates in business and CIS and i have learned
a lot on how the world works.

i think it had to do with marketing.... first off the US didn't get the gt4 cause of poor sales with the alltrac.

secondly, the 6gc's target was young women so they made the celica the "economy" sports car, and gave it economical motors.

I also agree though with the emissions etc. mentioned by others... and the fact that the engines we in the US got were already being used... that makes it easy.

^^^ Toyota of Japan had Eddie Murphy do some "Celica" commercials for them in the early 90s. Pretty funny how he pronounces the word "Celica" in them too.

The US doesn't want us to enjoy a fast or semi-fast Japanese car. Unless it cost $80k+
