Hey guys,
I'm new here and wanted to get something straight. Are the 7A-FE motors from 90's Corolla the same as the 7A-FE in the Celica's? I have a 97' ST Celica that threw a rod bearing and I'm looking for a replacement engine. Would it be safer to buy a OBDII 7A-FE from another Celica or would a 94-95 Corolla motor do? If a Corolla motor will do, what are some of the things I would need to use from the Celica 7A-FE to work with the 7A-FE in the Corolla motor? Any info would be appreciate. Thanks! |

a 94/95 Corolla motor would be too much trouble since it's OBDI

a 94/95 Corolla motor would be too much trouble since it's OBDI Okay, when did the Corolla's go to OBDII? 97? And would a 7A-FE out of that year be easier to swap into the Celica? On another note, I can't seem to find any 7A-FE motors from 97's, I've only found a few out of 96's, are they the same as 97's 7A-FE's aka OBDII? That's when the change was made. and the Corolla with the 7A in America was the AE102, from 93-97 -------------------- taking too long to mod since '09

Anyone with any suggestions? |

The OBD1 would also work with minor mods basically you will swap the Intake manifold from yours to the new engine

there is bad info here, sure the year went to ODBII but that doesnt matter. the OP threw a rod, thats the bottem end! any and i mean ANY 7A bottom end will work just fine for you. all you ahve to do is put your head, manifolds, and accessories on it. sometimes you might get away with long block swapping just using your electronics.

I have no knowledge of putting a motor together so that's why I choose to just buy another 7A-FE motor and drop it back in.
Question here is which motor would be easiest to drop in? I can't seem to find any 97' 7A-FE, is a 96' the same? And 96st, what other minor mods would I need to make a older OBDI motor work? |

wow. lots of misinformation here.
you can use just about any 7afe you want, keeping these things in mind. if your car is 96+, like yours is, and you use a replacement out of an earlier year, you will have to use the following parts off your current motor. intake (with throttle body) and exhuast manifolds coolant waterneck crank position sensor, oil pump housing, and crank pully with intergrated trigger wheel for the crank position sensor possibly fuel rail and injectors (but thats more a 5sfe thing) harness and ecu thats the short list. basicly anything on the motor that has a sensor, your gonna wanna check against what you have, and make sure they are the same. if not, use the part off the old motor. -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

^^^ exactly, usually when you buy a used engine, you only get the longblock, no manifolds. so you will have to just transfer your stuff over. its not assembling the engine, just the sensors and manifolds.

That sounds like a lot to swap over. I'm a Nissan guy and when I dropped a earlier motor year 93' into my 97' chassis, I swapped distributor and intake manifold and ta da that was it. Is all that stuff listed above just SOME of the items I have to swap over? That sounds like a lot of stuff. =\ |

not sure how you got away with that since you put an ODBI engine in an ODBII car

Pretty much, you just have to take everything off your '97 block, then put it all on the new block you get.

I'm looking to do a swap. The donor car being a 1996 Corolla 7afe. The car it will be going into is a 1996 Celica that already has the same 7afe. I haven't looked too much at the coroll but i did notice the map sensor is a bit smaller and different, other than that things look the same. I get work release from jail everyday so i'm lookin to get this all done in 1-2 days. I've done a few engine swaps and builds so i'm wondering what problems i'm going to have that anyone knows of before i start at it? I know i could play around and take my time and read an fsm on both but kinda short on time. Thanks

Read? What's that? And where in the earlier posts does is state the complications, if any, of doing an obd II 7afe into another obd II 7afe? Please enlighten me And going from the same chassis is an obvious given that everything should work (depending on year), But i'm looking at an engine coming out of a corolla and going into a celica. Just in case some of you forgot or can't read earlier posts
Edit. So to ask question into simple terms... What differences are there between the obd II 7afe in a 1996 toyota corolla vs. an obd II 7afe in a 1996 toyota celica? I noticed the map sensor is different. What problems would I have with that? Can i just use my map sensor? I think I can but I know there someone on here that's done this a time or two that has some pretty useful info that'll help alot. Thanks. This post has been edited by vagina: Apr 4, 2011 - 5:18 PM |
