wider surface == wider contact patch == better traction. wider is most always better, the only downfall is that if they are too wide, they will rub...BUT, 215/40/17s will be ok on the celica. . i'd go wider, most definately.

Just my advice, but i would put the Mud/snow tires on your stock rims if you still have them. But as for tire size on 17's, I would go with a 215-45-17. The 45 series profile will give you a little more prtection for the rim.

In a snowy area the 205 will be better. In dry conditions a wider tire gives better grip, but in snow/ice/rain it just means more surface to hydroplane with(if you don't believe me, just watch some rally races, in snow/dirt they run 165-185 width and on tarmac they run 205+).
Although stock rims with 185/65/15 would be better. Not only will it give better grip in the snow, you won't have to worry about damaging the nicer rims(sliding into curbs...). |
