Yea well I really want to get rid of the ugly stock shifter but the ONLY shifter on ebay W/Overdrive button is like $70. To much for a shifter I say, so what I want to ask is, Is it possible to put a normal aftermarket auto shifter and put the O/D button elsewhere? This would really help.

wow. that was funny...i fixed the title for you...and i know the auto shifter can be changed, and yes, the OD button would be able to be put elsewhere. just a matter of you wiring it up, and making sure you get the right kinda button. hopefully somone will reply that has actually swapped the shifter knobs, as i never have.

Yes, you can do it no problem. Just take the screws out of the normal auto shifter and take out the... molding around the shifter so you can get into the cars guts. The shifter won't come right off because it's held on by the OD wire. The wire itself is shielded by a plastic piece which you have to cut. Once you do that, cut the wire and remove the stock shifter. use a coat hanger and pull the wire you cut out of the shifter assembly and to where you can work with it.
Put on the new shifter and find a place to mount the OD button. For the button itself, just use the one on the original shifter. Use a knife to pop off the plastic plate covering the button, and then there is one screw holding it in place. Take that out and re-wire it. Then you will have a OD button and new shifter ready to go! |

GREAT! Thanks FallenHero, i think i know what you mean by "The wire itself is shielded by a plastic piece which you have to cut." Is it that sliding cover that moves with the shifter? cause if so it's broken, don't know why the car was like that when I bought, that's why I plan to put a shifter boot with the new shifter, even though it will look like a manual with the knob I plan to install. Again, thanks for the info!

Hey, I found a really cool shifter/boot combo. Is it possible to use a manual knob if it tighten it to where the shift lock is always pressed?? Or would this mess up the trans shifter?

go to circuit city. they have some nice lookin auto shifters for like 20 bucks. with od buttons.

Fallenhero is right about hooking up another switch to it which is simple. The easiest but not proper way to do is as follows(it works and i've done it before on my last toyota). If the shift knob you want doesn't have an od button on it, and you always leave overdrive on anyways,and if you don't want to hook up an external switch this is what you do>Press the od button so as that it is on as normal, don't press it again at all,now remove your shift handle and cut the wires but cut them one at a time taping the ends up and don't let them come in contact with each other the whole time you are doing this. After all that put your new shift knob on and your overdrive will always be on.

![]() I personallyplan on getting a manual shift knob soon. To do this is a bit tedious though. You have to tighten it down on the portion that moves, so when you want to shift, you grab the shift knob, and push it down. Get the picture? Also, you cannot leave it all the way down. Nothing will work right. For one, your key won't leave the accessory position with the button depressed. Don't believe me? Go try it ![]() Jon-->learned the hard way. |

fallenhero, I don't think i typed what I was trying to say right, I didn't mean leave the shifter button pressing in i meant the od button, sorry about that. The manual shift knob idea sounds like it might work by the way you were describing it.You can also shorten your auto shifter,looks cool if you've got a shift boot,eventhough it doesn't serve any purpose.

Yes, it does look nice. I would have a button for the OD were I you. If you don't there will be no way to drop into third gear when somebody revs at you. True enough, it will do it on it's own, but it's faster if you do it.

I want to relocate the O/D button to the steering wheel some how because I use it ALOT, well I use ALL the gears alot.......much better response through corners/ streetstarts/ and drag races........so yea, leaving it on is out of the question. Fallen, I know what you mean by how to use the shifter, and I could get a manual looking knob without having to do that, I just want to use a manual knob because it comes with a matching carbonfiber boot ![]() On ebay they have a shifter that has a sleeve that goes on the stick( ![]() ![]() ![]() |

LOL! you changed it to pooper, haha. funny stuff. is it any easier to shift with an aftermarket shift knob? cause using the stock one w/the button gets annoying....sometimes i shift it too far or not far enough to get into drive. |

With my levoc knob I can shift from drive to second in one swift action. It won't shift into first unless you push the botton, but it will go straight into secon with little effort .

why not get a shifter from a 91=95 mr2?

The shifter on the pic is the one I can get on Ebay, and thats the exact same setup I was going to. The only problem was the O/D but I'll figure it out.
