Filled up yesterday. Got home & noticed a strong gas smell in the gas tank area.

Is there a " History " of the tanks getting rusted out in any certain areas or connections // fittings going bad? Before I take it to the shop & put on a lift, it would be good to have the info. I'll check the filler neck areas, fuel line connections // fittings, lines & hoses, & sending unit mount area.

Any thing I'm forgetting?

Thanks for any tips!

The seams separate after a while. That's what mine is doing. If I fill it above half, it smells a bit. Not too bad yet though. Not enough for me to get it replaced. My vent neck is also rotted out. My filler neck was rotted when I first bought it, but the owner replaced it when I complained.

My filler neck was also rotting out (only rust on my car luckily), it smelled gas quite a lot when you were near it. Replaced it and no gas fumes anymore.

It's not uncommon for your charcoal canister to rupture and fill your filler lines with the charcoal bits. When this happens the vent on the gas tank has a tendency to get stuck open, and you will smell a strong gas smell. A very good indicator to whether or not this is happening is if you have trouble filling up your gas tank. The gas nozzle would keep shutting off as if the gas tank is full, but you know that it is empty and you are confused why gas won't go in. This is because there are charcoal bits in the filler neck keeping the gas from going in as it is supposed to. I saw this problem on a camry once, other than that I have only seen it on kia's and hyundai's, I've never heard of the celicas having this problem, but you never know. I'm not saying this is your problem, I'm just saying that it is something to look into.

I had to change the gas tank out on mine because of a puncture in the bottom of the tank. The tank I got was from a junkyard and had been sitting in the weather for many years and shows no signs of rusting completely through, just a few spots of surface rust. If it only has a gas smell when full or nearly full I would suspect a one of the various hoses coming off the tank. If it's not the filler hose then pull the fuel pump access hatch under the back seat in order to check the condition of the rubber hoses on the top of the tank. I had to replace all mine because they cracked when I sqeezed them. It could be the charcoal canister but if it was it should have thrown the engine check light and you would be using more gas than usual (the canister cost way more than you would think).
