Trying to do research on what the difference is. What I've been reading is that only the struts are the difference where it is a non sealed vs sealed struts, and that the sports strut just has a stiffer damper. which in the end is not really a difference when you are buying struts, they will still bolt on either which one you get. The bottom line here is that I have not read anyone say anything else difference besides the sticker and the GT-S name. Are there any other differences? All threads I read on are the same thing over, just the struts. I am thinking there may be a difference because for the lateral arms in the rear there are two part numbers, one for sports and one w/o sports version. The price is the same which makes me think the two part numbers are actually the same BUT, the part that gets me is that why would there be two part numbers then. Another thing for some reason, my US bought Celica VIN cannot be found in any Toyota Database, but how could that be? Its not made for Europe or Japan. I tried testing my VIN online and it pops up as invalid. but it shows up in toyodiy but it doesnt give me the definite part number, it still gives me both. I've doublechecked the VIN over and over but its all over my registration and insurance. I think it just freaked me out about my VIN not being found in US databases.

but my front original shocks are non-sealed so that means it pretty much isn't the sport package. looks like the one in the picture that shows unsealed Example

well only st and gt came in USA. GT-S can be found in Canada.

the ST has skinnier sway bars than the GT. I've read something about the rear arms on the Sports being thicker. But honestly getting the polyurethane bushings will make up the difference for these.

yup GT is only in USA, but they showed me all the proof screenshots that its not in their databases, so using a VIN to buy OEM parts is useless. I tested it on dealer sites and I was surprised it came out invalid. of course it showed up in toyodiy cus that shows everything...

the GT-S in Canada and some GT's in the U.S. came with the sports package and the differences are:

  • sealed (twin-tube?) struts
  • rear springs (stiffer probably)
  • (thicker) rear stabilizer bar and bushings
  • all four rear lateral arms (to incorporate larger bushings)

the parts catalog also lists the rear strut bar and panel covers exactly like the gt-four but clearly they were not actually included so the idea was probably scrapped before production began. it probably has to do with the rear bar being in the way when storing large cargo in the hatch.

so the sports package only stiffens the rear suspension promoting more oversteer making the car feel more 'sporty'.

My '99 came with the Sport Package and was sold in Maryland originally. The accessory code for the package is SX and you can find out if you vehicle came with it by going to a local Toyota dealership and having them run the VIN in TIS.

i believe in Canada it was GT-S. all it really is is a better dampening shock for the most part and is a sealed shock - cartridges cant be used.

naw, there is the regular mcpherson which most of us have, there is the sports package on some which is what I just mentioned about a sport shock, and then the ss3 suspension is a superstrut, looks similar to other cars that have those extra arms, unlike macpherson, the strut just hangs on the bottom with two bolts.

nothing great to get a sports package shock with the aftermarket options around, its just good to have if you bought it the car brand new stock with it.

I think besides the struts, the sports package came with leather seats and side skirts. It was more of a marketing thing than anything you would want to upgrade to. My 98 is a sports package and also includes the nice 3 spoke steering wheel but i think that was offered for all 98-99s.
