If your DMV does not require SMOG or CARB testing you should be fine. Only state I know that requires that is CA and TX. I had a silvertop and never needed to smog it. You can always cut the wire to the dash for the Check engine light or rig it with a toggle switch. Why a blacktop? Parts are very hard to come by and expensive, if I were you I stick with a 4agze.

I think this is true about 10 years ago. But nowadays, you can interchange parts with camrys, supras, mr2s, celicas. There are a lot more tuner shops these days that have parts available as well. From experience, i actually had a harder time finding parts for my ae101 4agze though.

As for the smog issue, you might not pass the visual inspection since there's no EGR on the blacktop, but i'm sure you'll get away with the exhaust test with a cat converter in place.

I think he meant the 4A-GZE from the supercharged MR2, since you can get every part for it from any local parts house. Really that'd be the best engine to swap to if staying in the A series family. You actually have torque, can find parts, and supposedly it's easy to get them into the 200hp range.

first off, why the 4A-GE? the 4A-GZE is still a downgrade IMO. with the information that out there you need to consider a newer engine. one that has more than 4 cylinders.

It's a lot better than the 7A... I agree, buy a car with more cylinders and preferably puts the power to the correct wheels.

Well said, Ditch your car and get a bigger engine, or a much much faster car.

I looked into doing the 1MZ swap. To me it just isn't even worth it. For the cost of the swap and what I could sell the Celica for, I could get a much faster car with an easier to build platform. Oh, and there's no work involved. Not to take away from people that do swaps, but it's not always the best route. I don't want to go through the whole car selling/buying process again, but for me it's the logical decision.

i have a silvertop in my celica atm....and for our cars, i just dont think its worth it; thats why im doing a 3s swap. You can find some part numbers but their never the ones your looking for and your local toyo dealership wont be able to find anything, believe me. I know your thinking about the blacktop but that cant be that much of a difference in performance. Their high revving engines and fun at higher speeds but im tellin ya theres no torque man. Go with the 4agze if you have not decided yet. Alex's 7a with a supercharger was fun and i didnt even get to drive it lol, just rode along. Anyway thats my two cents.
