Do you think my street tires are reusable?
The shop that took them off messed on the rubber around the band.

may not hold air. and you will have a leak problem. maybe with inner tubing.

Changed many tires in my days, i would almost stake my reputation that they would never bead correctly again. I agree, with njcc could possibly make them work with inner tubes, but there would be other issues doing that. Needless to say, i doubt any tire shop would be willing to touch them to much liability. I know i certainly wouldn't touch them, and i'd probably go after whatever shop messed them up.

Well I gave them to my friend since he works at a dealership and he said he could do it for free. So I really can't go after anybody since it was off the books. kindasad.gif

1. It is easier to criticize than to aid.
2. Even though we may tinker on our cars, tire mounting is probably often professionally handled.
3. Show him the damage now so he can witness himself, when you want the tires mounted have him do it. Any issue at that point should be resolved by him if he is a reputable mech and friend (and has some balls to admit he mucked it up.).

I don't think those tires are salvageable, seeing as there is now a balance issue, not to mention poor seating; imagine the sidewall flexing under load, instant tire failure seems like.

He knows he ****ed up, and I told him he did to. I just wish he would have called me and told me we can't get the tires off without messing them up.
They were 215/50/16 and the side walls were super stiff. The sidewalls barely flexed as it was because of the hard sidewalls.
Guess it's my loss at this point, off to start looking at new tires...

I've got a jacked up bead on my motorcycle, I havent had a problem with it yet.
If you think about it, the damage is on the inside rubber, which is useless. The exterior rubber that seats against the rim is intact, as is the steel belt.
Mount that mofo up and see if it holds air, just make sure to mount it on the rear if you aren't confident about it.

As well as I going to be making some long trips this spring, most likely to Jersey a few times, one to NH, possible CT, and some other places.
I'll take one to a shop this weekend and ask though.

Its your risk, I just want everyone to realize that the rubber is structurally useless. The steel/nylon or w/e threads are what keep the tire together and make it stiff. The rubber just makes the tire airtight and provides traction.

In this case all you need is that steel belt along the bead intact, and just enough rubber on the exterior of the bead to seal it against the rim. The rubber on the inside is unneccesary, except to protect against inept tire shop workers

Might not be a bad idea to spray rustoleum in the exposed wire.

I doubt you'd have any problems with blowouts. Personally, I'd just line it with some rubber cement over the exposed wire and call it a day.

Well I'm planning on doing autoX a few times this Spring as well as traveling and doing a bunch of cruises in the local area.

Let me ask you guys this:

Do you think it will hold up doing autoX?

Honestly, autocross isn't much more aggressive than what I do on local streets/potholes/bumps and whatnot... I would think you'd be fine unless the steel bands are broken. If there is separation in the metal, don't chance it... but if it's just that rubber layer, cement it up and go ahead, but again, that's just me being cheap lol.

Trash. Maybe it's because I've been a cyclist for longer than I care to remember, or because I'm a safety freak, but that doesn't look safe at all. I co-owned a bike shop, so throwing out a $50 tire wasn't as painful as it might be for most, but I threw them out before and after the bike shop. Some had less than a couple miles on them! A person needs to establish a safety threshold question like, "Would I hand Grandma the keys, and not say a word about mucked up tires?" I owned plenty of motorcycles as well, and they got a safety check before I slung my leg over the seat. If that meant 15 times a day, that's what it was. A rip in upholstery is one thing, but when you start to think something is unsafe, chances are you're right.
