I stumbled on this video from Exedy on how a clutch works. Pretty basic stuff but the most interesting part is in the second half of the video that explains the function of the springs in the clutch disk and why sometimes we hear a rattle at idle with performance clutches.

This video goes into even more detail on the clutch dampener.

I think based on this, I will never buy an unsprung disk again. The spring dampeners are a very important thing to have!

The only downside is that sometimes the springs fall out. I believe that this is mostly caused by us using clutches with much harsher friction material than what we actually need. When the clutch engages, it puts too much stress on the springs and they end up popping out. The best solution to this problem that I've seen so far, is to encase the springs in rubber. This is done on a few OEM style disks but for some reason has not made it into aftermarket performance clutches.

I have an OEM car, so I've never ventured into all the other clutch types. Still cool to see though. I am disappointed that it wasn't all anime'd up like their instructions. tongue.gif

I just wish Exedy made something other than a basic street disk for us. It seems they really put a lot of effort into testing and engineering.

I just buy their stuff for the hilarious instruction diagrams, so I don't know. tongue.gif Our cars aren't performance cars though, at least not over here. Perhaps over in Europe and Japan they offer higher stage clutches.

I didn't know the clutch and pressure plate had so many individualized components. Very cool video.

I run their stage 2, 3 puck. No complaints, but its racing clutch. I dont find it hard to drive but someone drove my car through tech and they were bitching about it.




Just get a different fly wheel. I'm pretty sure (not certain) the all trac flywheel is the same width, just not the surface area contact for the clutch, may have to round out the bolt holes a little for the 5sfe; not sure. I used to know very well but its been 2 years since i've messed with all the different parts. Part: 16953A + alltrac/gt4 flywheel.

these videos are full of awesomeness! I felt like I was getting smarter by the minute with that mid 90's bass techno music.

honestly good video. this should be sticked. i was looking for a video like this, but never found. Exedy is just as good if not better than the OE supplier Aisin Brand. I run exedy oem or nothing else. japan parts yay!

I have a 3sgte. I guess my n00b mistake was looking under the Celica offerings, and not actually taking the time to see what they have for the alltrac!

Doesn't seem like it would be too hard to pop the springs out, find a company that can cast rubber and urethane, encase them, and shove them back in.

There's a couple of designs that help to avoid the springs from popping out.

The springs are a must for daily driver clutches. The unsprung hubs are exclusively meant for racing. The springs absorb engine torque, which makes for a smoother drive and less chatter. That's why unsprung hub disks are rated for higher torque specs than their sprung counterparts.

I've been in both sprung and unsprung and I can say that the amount of chatter from an unsprung doesn't make it worth the few extra ftlbs of torque it can hold in a daily driver scenario...
