Hi I have a 1996 ST204R Celica (Automatic) .
A Camry gearbox from 5sfe engine is much cheaper to buy here. Will it fit and work ok ?
Thanks in advance, and sorry if this has been posted before. I am new to the forum.

dont know enough about the auto trans on the camry. if you can look up the trans number and compare it to the celica. if they are the same then yes...

It will bolt up just fine since they are both 5S-FE, however the ECU control might be different. this is why autos are bad and manuals are good

Thank you very much Smaay, and t al others who viewed to try and help.
I actually ended up getting a trans from 2000 Camry, which the auto wreckers said is the same part number so will be the right part. Great relief to have confirmation from you.
I will be sure to ask my mechanic to check part numbers and make sure they are the same. I guess he can see part number before he removes it from vehicle ?
Re. manuals good and autos bad. I have only just bought my first manual (a van) so cant say yet. My friends tell me manuals are more fun to drive. However my brother whom managed a toyota dealership for many years, said that many of these older celicas that are manual would have been thrashed and damaged as a result, just something to keep in mind perhaps when considering purchase. Maybe get an old auto Celica , then convert to manual thumbsup.gif
Thanks very much.
Have a great day

Btw. Just to help any others in a similar situation in future, needing new gearbox.
Camry 2000 auto gearbox, asking price $220 (1 month Warranty, ested, out of damaged vehicle 180,000Km) .
Celica 1996, same gearbox cheapest price I could find was $250 asking price (7 day return).
I got it for $200, mechanic putting it in for me Saturday for 2 hours labour, $40 per hour.
