So i recently (about a month ago) changed my clutch with help from a friend. After the change it ran well for a few days. Then the car began having an issue where it would start up then just die after a few seconds and every now and then it would run good. I never found out what was wrong with it to cause this issue i just let the car sit and threw some parts at it every few paychecks. Now however the car only cranks when it wants to. The starter relay clicks and the fuel pump works but it only cranks every now and then. I plan on throwing a new starter at it when i get payed again. I believe the solenoid may be going out. What i need help on is what would cause the start and die issue. Fuel pressure is good and is getting spark
Parts ive thrown at it: - Fuel Pump - Fuel Filter - Plugs and wires - Ignition coil (the CEL came on for this) - The capacitor inside the distributor that connects to the ignition coil - TPS - Camshaft sensor Any ideas? this is my daily and i need it running asap |

if the car didn't have any issues before the clutch change then I would say check the clutch pedal switch, it may need adjusting

Have you tried starting and letting it run with your foot on the accelerator? If it does fine then it means your idle air control valve is gummed up and needs cleaned or replaced. The other thing to check would be the MAP sensor and coolant temp sensor for the ECU, you can find testing procedures online for most all components so you don't throw money at it hoping that's it. Autozone has online manuals for free if you make an account.

These starters can do that. I've replaced mine once before. The second time around, I decided to rebuild mine myself - turns out the, only thing that wears on them are the brushes, and the plunger gets clogged with dust. Mine didn't even need the brushes replaced - the plunger was just gummed up with crap causing it not to make contact.
Identical symptoms to yours - relay clicks, but no starer. Whack a starter with a stick, or click the ignition enough times, and it starts up. A few bolts hold it together. Just take it apart and clean it... Toyota sells a rebuilt kit with all the parts your need for pretty good price. |
