Before you guys put on your turbo kits, what things did you do to your engines to keep running safely. I'm seriously considering turboing my car at 4-6PSI regularly and occasionlly using an 8PSI as a high boost. What kinds precations should I take for this boost level??

Just keep it up to date maintance wise; make sure everything's always running smoothly.. etc.. Thats not a very high boost level; you should be fine.

6 months?? Taking your sweet time. I expect to start at latest December 12th, and finish, at latest, July 20th. But in all reality, it'll probably be done in one weekend before the 12th sometime
Nik, looking nice.. Engine dressing kit might be a little too much without custom paint on the manifolds and stuff. ct26 turbo? No intercooler? |

Ahh, you do have a FMIC, my mistake Nice job avoiding the heat from the exhaust manifold after the FMIC btw
I also hear that if you have the BOV right after the intercooler exit, it sounds cooler.. dont know about that... |

every now and then it SHOULD be fine. I'm not sure running 8 psi all the time- depends on the condition of your engine
Any of the 7afte guys know? I'm a 5sfe man myself |

strongly agreed, check the connections (nuts, bolts, etc) and check oil level at least once a week and you will be fine. Ignore the simple things and itll eventually tear ur turbo and/or engine apart. -------------------- |

Forkee, those don't work that well- and it still won't show your hp because your acceleration etc is based off the cars weight, aerodynamics, etc.

he is probably looking to run 12+psi or for more reliability at 10-psi 8psi is just fine for the car, if you have the right supporting mods which i didnt, $90 fuel pump, i waited to buy mine, waited until the engine died(melted piston) my setup is now forkee's setup. i ran 8psi for 6k miles and not until i put the new turbo on and the boost was set at 10psi(didnt mean to) did my stock pump give out causing the damage. i looked inside my engine, everything was still good except the one piston. at 8psi i was faster than a rsx type s from a roll(he blew by me and cut me off so i caught him and passed him) the type s has 200hp and 140?tq or something like that, the torque may be low, but from a roll it doesnt matter much at all. they can run high 14's, and from a roll, you easily get high 14's acceleration out of those cars. and the ST-T was faster than my WRX, which would get off the line faster, but the way i launched my ST-T, it was at full boost before it even moved! incase some dont know, my ST-T was automatic my car was faster than 99-04 mustang gt's that were at most only had exhaust and intake(any more than that and GT's make a lot more power) the ST-T is a very fun car that still got me good milage, like 25mpg. had i changed the fuel pump from the get go, i would still be driving the car and be looking into mods that ad reliability(thicker HG) oh and i never got the chance to dyno tune the car, all that performance i got was before i installed the FMIC that forkee now has, i was running a DSM SMIC. i was waiting till i got the FMIC in to go to a dyno, but my 7afte came to a oil burning end, luckily my warranty covered all the repair costs, lol got a new shortblock for $0 -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

my goal is 8 psi.My engine is on the higher miles side 127,000 i turned it to 7 psi and blow the boot off the bottom of the turbo ( its because the I.C. piping is straight 90 degree angle but the turbo inlet is about 45 degree i cant get a good hold so i order a 45 degree silicone elbow and 2nd day air it should have it monday. When i dyno ran my car before the turbo results: 98.7 horse 128.7 torque after boost (5.5) i gained 35.5 torque and 32.6 horse not bad for that little boost you can diffently tell boost you gotta try it!

I had never modefied the compression ratio and kept it high and ran 7psi boost on it sometimes. I didnt have any help and went on it by myself. My oil pressure was too high also. Intercooler is a must, i went cheap and didnt put one on. My setup would be pretty good for an intercooler because the piping would stay away from the engine and exhaust manifold. Sadly i have run out of money and the project is dead. I have taken it off of the car to spare the engines life.
mine had about 105k on it and my lower boot used to blow off sometimes when i ran it high.
I had a carbon fiber hood to put on my car but the turbo would get too hot in the summer and i was afraid it would ruin the hood. mine was an automatic too, i have heard that an automatic handles the turbo setup better but id like a manual anyways http://www.geocities.com/dustin_az/car.html -------------------- -97 Celica ST

If you want to get the project done without half a$$ing it then you will need to know alot about how a turbo works. Or at least get someone that is working on your car that knows what they are doing. The cheapest way to go is to learn yourself and install the turbo yourself and piece together a kit, but if you dont do it right then you will face the consequences. If you have somebody else do it for you then its gonna cost a lot more and they may not care about how your car is gonna be down the line. I spent 2000 on my turbo but i missed a bunch of things like preparing my engine for the pressure. I should have done more research and had more things done. If i did it correctly, then i would have spent around 3500 but i ran out of money. unless your planning on showing the car, a lot of that money is going to go down the drain and youll never see it again, its an expensive hobby and thats what the people pay for cuz its something they enjoy.

It’s actually not that hard.... BUT automotive knowledge helps this is my first import engine I’ve mess with. Before it was ford's 302 V8.a few things you need a Chilton book for the car and Maximum Boost book (eBay or book store) along with a parts list there is one some where on the site it has parts like you need a manifold, drain hose, bov, etc on it. Also there are a few people that know a lot about turboing the 7a or 5s like just to name a few zipstrips, 97scelica, Nik (me),Forkee, itchy (i might have spelled some names wrong so sorry if i did) This post has been edited by nik: Jul 20, 2004 - 4:20 PM -------------------- yea your 3sgte is cool but ill stick to my 7agte
