 Octance boosters work? |

I keep seeing stuff about octance boosters, as an easy thing to increase hp. i noticed a diffence when i switched from low grade gas to premium gas. most of the octance boosters say they will bost octance from 3-4 pts. Nos makes one that says it will bost 10 pts, but it also says "acts as a lead substitute" and thats no good
 . but in short, do these boosters work?

Doesnt increase HP.
You didnt get any HP from yoru going from 87-93 so I think ur mind is playing tricks on you. The points system doesnt = octane. Its like 10 pts for 1 octane. Furthermore, its unnecessary to run premium although with high mileage engines it does help engine life. Putting in octane booster will do nothing except thin our ur wallet. if you're struggling with pinging with premium grade fuel (91-92 octane or whatever it is where you're from)... then it may work to correct that... as for performance... it has to do with your compression ratio and your engine's flow (intake/exhaust) whether or not you can make any sort of power. On a stock motor... no serious power gains...

hmm intresting, thx. What i noticed when i went to the higher grade stuff, was that everything was smoother, especially shifting, it just seemed smoother and tighter. i like it better, although it could be my mind
 .

Fuel has absolutely nothing to do with ur shifting.

Higher grade gas tends to burn cleaner and more efficiently than lower grade depending on the application. The recommended for our cars is 87 but for higher performance, 91-93 so says the manual. I did notice that everything is a bit smoother with the higher octane but like everyone else has said on a stock motor the octane boosters will do nothing for you except eat your cash. If you want some gains to go along with the boosters you will have to go turbo or any kind of forced induction (leaf blower motors are not accepted
 ).

octain helps reduce early detonation. on a stock 5sfe, you may notice the car running smoother, but you dont get any power increase.
with a turbo car, the higher the octain, the more boost you should be able to run. if i put in a tank of race gas into my car, that alone wont make it any faster, but it will mean that i could probably turn up my boost a lot more then what i could do with pump gas. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

octane booster is bad, it all had lead in it whether is says it does or not, do not use it.

I run 93...just to make sure the engine runs a bit cleaner and have since day one.. 87 has never touched my engine.

Leaded fuel isn't bad for all cars, such as mine. Leaded fuel will clog up a catalytic converter, but that's about it as far as disadvantages. And since I don't have a cat anymore, I could run leaded fuel if I wanted. However, my octane booster of choice is straight toluene.  When I put in a gallon of it in the tank and fill up the rest of my tank with 92 octane, my car seems to run quite a bit smoother...throttle response feels much better and the car seems to just have a smoother throttle feel. It's expensive to use on a regular basis though...I get it for $10 a gallon from my local paint store.

well, if you want to put it that way, i add pure menthanol to my gas everyonce in a while, get to that 110-115 octain level. Gotta love go-kart racing.

OMG another octane booster thread...wow. These are like a once a week occurrence. Same questions same answers. The search feature is nice. and it can be used ya know...

I put it in my car and noticed smoother acceleration and better throtle response. Octan has to do with the timing advance. Putting higher octan in your car is like advancing the timing a few degrees. So i think you could get a little extra power out if it. Plus, the gas will burn more evenly, providing efficiency and longer engine life. I really noticed a difference in power in my friends 71 Nova in the upper RPMs.
I think its good for something, but shouldnt be purchased regularly. |

The only difference in octane level is how explosive the gas is. Higher octane=less explosive. So, you would be paying more fore less explosive fuel. It does allow your car to run a little more smoothly by reducing the chance of misfire etc...,but will not increase hp or performance. It is all in your head.
