My third gear synchro is going out. when i shift into third at 3k or higher it makes a grinding noise even when the clutch is down. if its lower then 3k i have no problems. I looked in the Haynes book and it looks like there is only 1 synchro is this correct?
Also if anyone has done this themselves please let me know how hard it was. -------------------- hows it taste motha f*cka

You'll need special tools and there is a bunch of little things that will fall apart. Best be left to the professionals... Also, if the tranny is that bad, you're better off getting a good condition used one. rebuilds are $$$... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

well its just in high rpms and just on 3rd gear. I was thinking of changing my trans fluid ot synchro mesh or something and see if that may help.

The beater VW jetta I just picked up grinds 2nd if you shift remotly quick. Solution is to do what they did before syncros which is double clutch. If you dont know push the clutch in and shift to neutral release clutch, engage the clutch again and shift to gear it shouldnt grind. That should hold you from completely destroying the gear untill you can properly address the problem.
