i know most people say 3S-GTE because it was made for power...
but just think w/ me for a sec Cost to swap 3S-GTE into a GT: ~$3000(yes i said $3000) Mods for 5S-FE: Camshaft Regrings $500, Guaranteed 30hp(WebCams) Custom Turbo Kit $1200 Spearco Intercooler $1000 that right there should put you right at, if not over the 3S-GTE's horsepower. then an ECU programming would be in line, along with possible lowering of compression and all... just food for thought. any suggestions why the 5S-FE is a bad idea? -------------------- |

Well...I have one. From what I've learned...the 3S-GTE is FAR more capable of bigger and better stuff than the 5A-FE. Sure, in the short run with the same money, they would be the same. But in the future, the 5A-FE would sort of 'top-out' with it's modification limits while the 3S-GTE could continue with more modifications. Am I right on this one, guys?

I would go for a modded 5sfe because I live in cali and I don't think a 3sgte would pass emissions very easily, atleast a modded 5sfe would have a better chance.

Also, don't forget that ultimately, you're looking at an engine designed for boost versus boosting an engine that wasn't. Since it roughly costs the same with comparable initial results, why bother going for the more risky and more prone to failure set up?

Look at it like this. The 5s was made for economy while the 3s is a toned down race engine (not toned down much!) Find the newest 3s you can, and have fun dominating people in the future.

yeah, you can get a 5s up there, but it's $$. you can easily get it up to the STOCK 3sgte HP, but the 3sgte still has more potential. it can handle 400 HP on the stock internals. the 5s definitely can't do that. -------------------- 1994 Lexus ES300

Would the 3s-gte really have that much of a problem passing emissions?

I'm with mage.
Has anyone done this before? did they pass the emissions test? I'd go with 3S-GE:) Just to be softcore... How much HP are you planning to get out of a 5SFE-T? 400? 225-320 is seriously not enough. |

there is a guy who has 500hp on a 5S-FE
i remember just doing a search and coming upon the website before. yes there is a higher compression so you can't run as high of a boost but to get the 250hp you spoke of, you do not have to run 15PSI the biggest change for the 5S-FE (according the NA MR2 owners) are the WebCam Camshaft Regrinds... They gurantee at least 30 hp... that puts up to 165...plus 45 from burien turbo...plus ~30? from a good intercooler...that's 240 at 7-9PSI. and i'm not talking about overall outcome, i'm talking practical. i don't think anyone here is going to put 20G's under their car's hood. i was just thinking that the 5S-FE can be made into the 5S-GTE/FTE and be just as good as a 3S-GTE for the same price... if you ever wanted to keep going, it's not as hard to source parts for it, not JDM. and Rod Millen has the forged pistons just waiting.... Does anyone have idea on it other than the 'final outcome' of the two engines. -------------------- |

Missed a post :-\
there was a comment on the stableness of the 5S-FE at 200+ hp... is this due to the 22° angle? also, i estimated $3000 because of the following reasons 2nd gen clip w/ shipping : ~$1400-1500 then labor, sourcing some 'should be replaced' parts and axles: ~$1500 i understand most people say $5000, but I was convinced it could be done cheaper...and hopefully Nemesis proves me right -------------------- |

Here is the argument put down about this all the time. Do you really want to build up an economy engine?

If my car had 320whp, it would kill most any viper because it is FAR lighter than a Viper.
