6gc computer geeks, come to my rescue Options

i have a 1300mhz athalon computer with 2 hard drives
a 120gb as my master, and a 40gb as my slave
i disconnected my slave to put in another,
but forgot to set the jumper in the new one to be a slave
i realized it when it didn't boot up
so i reconnected my old slave and started it up,
but i got the same error as with the new drive.
i put in the windows 98 rescue disk, started Scandisk,
and realized that the problem is that my computer doesn't see that it has any hard drives hooked up

can someone please help

ok its very important that you connect the drives correctly.

You always want the master drive to be connected at the end of the cable, and the second (slave) to be connected at the middle of the cable.

Double check that the master drive is set at master, and the slave drive is set to be slave. If that doesnt work. You can try the CS (cable select ) option on both the drives and see if that works.

Last comes to last.. try to swap your cd rom drive cable with the hard drive cable.

look though your mother board manual and check with IDE connector is for what, that would let you know if you have the cd rom drive pluged into the hd connector.

my IDE cables never came unplugged from the motherboard, everything is physically exactly the way it was before, but my computer can't see that i have hard drives.

Werd, & also as stupid as it sounds, the placement of the HD's on the IDE cables make a difference to some motherboards. I have a ASUS A7N8X Deluxe & its picky as hell, when I reformatted my primary 40gb cause of corruption, on my secondary IDE cable I have a CD/RW (primary)& a 120GB (secondary) & I switched the two since I thought it'd look nice to see my 3 HD's boot up along with the CD/RW at the bottom & I couldn't get passed the loading screen on XP after a fresh install but when I set the CD/RW & HD back to the switch it had no problems.

edit: since the HDs didnt show up, do this:
start with the primary HD connected, doesnt matter what connection you use (primary or secondary) just set the jumper to Single Drive, if it shows up, then move the jumper to master & see if it boots, then try to bring in another HD & let us knows how it goes.

Try using another IDE cable that you know works, mines got screwed up & I ended up buying rounded IDE's cause if I moved mins around, the HD's would not show up sometimes.

my dad just called in a suggestion to try the system setup (the blue screen thing that gives all the vital settings to make the computer work)
and i did an autodetect HDDs and they both showed up just how i wanted.
