Alright guys - i dont know if you know or not but ive been waiting around for a good deal so i can purchase my celli (still without one) and once i do im going to do the 3s-gte engine swap. Now, i have heard tons of different swap figures as in how much it costs but i was curious if this sounded logical...
engine $1500 (2nd gen) shipped $300-400??
mechanic says he can put it in for around $800-1000
going to change the exhaust size to a 3inch pipe back $200 dollars
new sparkplug wires plugs possibly an engine tune up.. $200
so im at 3,300 which is a lot less than a lot of people keep saying and thats being pretty generous i think on my part...
What am i missing? possibly a clutch? add $400-500

any ideas??

well unless youre going to be cutting a hole on your hood... i think a FMIC budget should be set aside. biggrin.gif a hundred + on the piping... a hundred + on IC. then i think youre good... Oh and i dont think the GT-4 hood works with the 2nd gen 3sgte... i could be wrong tho. anyway if you get a 5 speed manual GT.... and if youre mechanic doesnt throw more surprises at you... i think youre right on the ball bro! biggrin.gif

edit: oh and i forgot the most important of all... do you TRUST youre mechanic? tongue.gif

there is a guy on here selling his car with a 3s engine for 5k. if you get an engine make sure you get a full clip. Makes it easier swap process

Yeah your price is kinda low because your not getting a clip, bank on 2000 for a clip + shipping.

For a front clip $2k
Intercooler $200
Piping anywhere from $150-$300 depending on how you run your pipes.
Tune up stuff, belts, oil, seals $200-$300.

If you get an st you will need a new tranny $300 - as high as $1500 if you get the e153 with lsd.

So it will usually run anywhere from $3500 to $5k

My clip alone was 3500 shipped.

No it wont, the 2nd gen gt4 intercooler relies on a moving airflow over it to cool the charge air which is why the 2nd gen GT4 has a forward facing hood scoop. With a bit of work you can get a 3rd Geb GT4 chargecooler to fit but its not that easy.

if u have an st all u would need extra vs the gt install would be gt motor mounts, gt drivetrain supports, and the gt tranny? would u need axles? cuz this would open up a whole new amount of prices

It'd be smart to replace the timing belt, idler pulley, and waterpump while the engine is out of the car too.

expect to pay 3-7grand. some people do it for less, and some for more. having a mechanic do the work for you will add to the cost tho.

a "tune up" is a MUST. replace every gasket, hose, all belts, water pump, etc etc etc....

Yes you need the GT axles as well, the st axles don't fit in the gt tranny.

does anyone know exactly every single damn thing u will need for an st to 3sgte swap using the 5sfe gt manual tranmission on a 97 st celica? im seriously about to do this and i want to get it the cheapest way....should i just get the engine by itself like a 2rd gen ive found them for with wiring turbo, ac, ps, distributor, alt, intercooler, except the tranny for round $1000 then what else do i need from there besides gt tranny, engine mounts, tune up parts, gt axles

There are literally HUNDREDS of threads on this. The search feature is your friend. In particular, you might want to look at the threads that are "stickied" at the top of this forum and for a thread that Yota started about 2 months ago. Also, look for posts by kuya1284, supersprynt, sphinx, and others who have spent many hours posting replies to this very same question. Once you have researched for awhile, ask specific questions and, if people know, they will help you fill in the gaps. Good luck.

Jay.

i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.

Wiring of course, and I would get the clip. From the clip you get the harness and the ecu, ignitor and other things you need.

When you buy just an engine, the seller likes to leave out important pieces.

Get a clip, and take your time. search is gonna be your best friend for a while. Slowly pick up a part here and there then soon thereafter get a clip.

OH, and ur gonna need two axle brackets if you have an st.

If you pay less, expect less. Thats one of my theories in life. It doesn't mean that you have to pay a lot for everything, just don't expect great things for less money. I'd also say going with a clip would be the best bet. But I'm just going to supercharge my 5S. I'm working out the details this weekend, I'm pretty dang exited. And I never get exited.
