Lately my tranny has been making noise. When the car is in neutral with the clutch pedal out, the car will often make a sort of soft repetitive clacking noise. If I let off the clutch pedal very softly however, the noise is much quieter. And the noise disappears when I push in the clutch or when I am in gear.

Does this sound like a problem involving the throwout bearing? I had this problem before, so we replaced the throwout bearing when I put in a new clutch, and now I've got the same problem again. frown.gif

Whenever I think of clacking noises, I think of noisy valves or a loose timing belt. Have you tried listening to it in the engine bay while someone else works the pedals?

It's definitely not the timing belt or valves. My VVT pulley makes a little bit of noise though. But the noise I'm talking about is definitely coming from the tranny area.

get a stethicope for cars at sears. you can put it right on the tranny and hear whats going on in there... i had a noise like that and had my clutch and TO replaced. now im on a new clutch and you know what i learned....clutches make noise! lol so dont worry about it unless it becomens and issue where you cant drive the car, or the sounds gets crazy loud.

Well, I do worry about it...it's not overly loud or annoying, but anything involving the tranny(you know, the thing that can explode, shooting parts through the firewall and into my body) worries me. wink.gif

yeah, but the throw out bearing cant really do any damamge, its just a bearing. most of the time when u hear of horror stories, its because the owner was sliping the clutch so much that there was too much heat for the pressure plate, clutch and flywheel to handle and those parts broke...so, dont try doing any burnouts and youll be fine for now

Mine has been doing the same thing for over 3 years with 2 different clutch kits. No problems. Even when the bearing was new, it still did make a bit of noise. I beat up on the thing too... so I wouldn't worry too much...
