The calipers are different... the backplates have nothing to do with the braking system... it's mostly a dust cover. The knuckles/spindle/hubs are all the same.

Not really much point is there? I mean they are only a few mm bigger, save yourself the hassle buy st rotors and spend the change of braided brake lines for better braking

you can't swap between gt front and rear you keep the ST front and swap ST REAR DRUMS to GT REAR DISK you have to keep front st rotors or bump it up to 7th gen |

I have GT front brakes on my ST. In order to use GT discs, you need to change the calipers and caliper mounting brackets over to GT parts. Brake lines bolt into the new calipers just fine. I don't have backing plates on my conversion.
I did this years ago, wish I'd have kept my Toyota boxes with the OEM part numbers, but a dealer should be able to supply the info. |

yea GT works on the front
just need to replace the whole assembly and there should only be backing plates on the rear for the e-brake the front only has, caliper, disk, pads, bracket |

QUOTE(DmVinny @ May 21, 2005 - 6:41 PM) Can you take the rear disc brakes from a GT and put them in an ST? Yes... you need the spindle/hub/backing plate/ebrake drum (should all be one piece), calipers /w brackets, rotors, ebrake cables, and brake lines. Essentially the entire rear assembly that bolts onto the lower suspension arms and strut. It's a direct swap over to the ST. QUOTE(playr158) yea GT works on the front just need to replace the whole assembly and there should only be backing plates on the rear for the e-brake the front only has, caliper, disk, pads, bracket The front has backing plates also. Why wouldn't they? Backing plates have nothing to do with the e-brake, they're mostly a dust cover. You also don't need the "whole assembly". You need the calipers with brackets, and rotors. That's it. Yet another example of you not knowing what you're talking about... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

as far my situation i have no other choice but to upgrade my front ST to GT disc...i bought cross drilled and slotted rotors about 2 years ago and just gettin' a chance to put them now...not knowing i have to change the whole backplate, spindle, hub, calipers and everything...
backing plates on the front from a GT and an ST have two different part numbers...therefore 2 different size...backing plate for an ST is a little smaller than the GT...when i tried inserting just the rotors it would not spin and clear the backing plate |

You really have ZERO clue what you're talking about. You can't even differentiate what a dust cover and backing plate is. First you say the backing plate is part of the e-brake, then you say the fronts don't have them, now you're saying you refer to them as dust covers AFTER I tell you they have nothing to do with the e-brake system? That's all a backing plate does... is to cover the rotor. Woopie... Don't try to sound like a smart ass calling things all sorts of crazy names. As for "whole assembly"... whole assembly is the spindle/knuckle, hub, calipers, rotors, basically everything minus the suspension arms and strut. AGAIN, more proof you just don't know jack sh!t. You continually speak out of turn and pass off completely WRONG information. You are the one who really needs to just Shut the f*ck up. QUOTE(Ve1Ls1dEvolutioN) as far my situation i have no other choice but to upgrade my front ST to GT disc...i bought cross drilled and slotted rotors about 2 years ago and just gettin' a chance to put them now...not knowing i have to change the whole backplate, spindle, hub, calipers and everything... You don't need to change any of that for the fronts... you only need calipers. For the rears, you'll need the entire assembly. QUOTE backing plates on the front from a GT and an ST have two different part numbers...therefore 2 different size...backing plate for an ST is a little smaller than the GT...when i tried inserting just the rotors it would not spin and clear the backing plate Like I said, they're more or less dust covers. You can remove them completely (fronts only), or just bend them back to clear the rotor. No big deal. They're usually removed when big brake kits and such are installed. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"
