learn a stick, stick is faster. The only place you might have an advantage with an auto is if you spray.

You would need an ECU that can control the transmission. You can't use the caldina tranny because it is AWD.

I meant to ask the same question before. The question is who do you take it to. 10/10 mechanics will say no because they know they pains that go behind swapping a new engine and furthermore know how difficult and annoying it would be to attach auto to the engine.
In my opinion automatic tranny can and will support the engine, with a few modifications that is. take me and player158 I have ST and he has ST I have auto 7afe he has manual 7afe Visually engines look the same and have the same stock HP. 1993-1999 toyota supra comes both manual and auto with same hp. Many sports performance vehicles, including race cars come with auto transmission. I think with persistence it is possible to find a mechanic that does it. I am definetly thinking about swapping and autoing 3sgte As much as it is fun to drive a stick, Computer controlled tranny with perfect shifting is better performancewise, at least in my opinion. -------------------- Captain Pessimist

as far as i know the automatic transmission won't be able to handle the power of the 3sgte. the 5sfe manual tranny is already pushing the power of the 3sgte. trust me if your putting the 3sgte you want something that will handle the power and an automatic transmission won't handle it. i know because i have an automatic 5sfte and it won't even grab when i want it to. trust me on this manual transmission is thw way to go.

the case of the automatic being superior to the manual only comes down to really high-end drag racing where you're using an auto that costs like 10k. When it's a low-end tranny like this you're better off learning how to drive a stick than going through the headaches of finding a strong auto and converting the car.

Just get an automatic MR2 Turbo clip and you'll have everything you need. Shouldn't be too hard. By the way, the advantage of an auto is that you don't loose boost between shifts because the throttle plate never closes.

it really does make more sense to learn stick, go to a driving school, pay them $100 and they will teach you everything you need to know, or just do what i did, buy a TT 300zx from an auction, make ur dad drive it home for you, take the keys, and go in the street and play with it. God that car was fast... R.I.P 300zx

just go in a parking lot and learn how the clutch works how much gas to give so it doesnt stall and how fast to come off the clutch...learn the combination thats all u need...it will take a week at the most to learn how to do it all and after a month its no big deal anymore...trust me it will look reallly stupid to have a modded celica with a 3sgte and all that stuff and then an auto tranny

So she wants to know if you could do it or not and how. I feel like I get this sometimes too... Of course she can learn to drive stick, anybody can. A couple of practice lessons and she'll be fine. Maybe she doesn't want to go through the hassle. I know I don't here in Florida, with all the traffic we got. Must be a pain. And a 3S-GTE AUTOMATIC would be kinda cool. There's a guy that goes to the races in Okeechobee here. He has a 900HP Supra TT AUTOMATIC. Damn skippy. And everyone thinks he's the s h i t because he's wooping everyone's ass over there. It's cool because there's no time wasted between shifts. It's like "VrrrrrrrrrmVrrrrrrrrrmVrrrrrrrrrmVrrrrrrrrrmVrrrrrrrrrmVrrrrrrrrrm" instead of "Vrrrrrrrrrm...Vrrrrrrrrrm...Vrrrrrrrrrm...Vrrrrrrrrrm...Vrrrrrrrrrm". That gives him a nice advantage. VERY interesting. But yeah, I can't really give any advice because I don't know much about this, I'm more of show than go...(I have an ST ) But what I'm trying to say is, let's give more helpful info... This is the only good one I've seen on this post:

first thing i have to say is.. what is up with you people. Dont sway from the main topic! he wanted to know how well an auto 3s will work. Its the same when people ask about mods. Everyone just flames and throws out the 3s swap. Thinks how useful this topic will be when someone searches for it in the future, and all they get is members telling them to learn to drive stick.
I know there are many reason to drive manuel. Personally I can drive a manual, but due to a car accident. my elbow prevents me from owning a manual car. ( elbow throbs with pain after driving for a while ) Hey Doc, Do you know how much power the auto 3s from a mr2 can handle? I bet it will be one hard clip to find. |

If it's the engine you mean, it would be no different than the 5-speed. If it's the tranny you're talking about, good question, but with most people running modified 3SGTEs that are making about 300 flywheel hp, I don't think it would be a problem. Getting over 300 is quite expensive so at that point you may as well think about getting a fully built tranny at that point. We need a sunglass wearing smilie, and we should have a thumbs up if we're going to have a thumbs down. -------------------- -Dr Tweak, 6GC's resident engine swap wiring expert extraordinaire Click here to see my swaps drtweak@phoenixtuning.com |
