Guess what happened to my paintjob, a good mistake, sort of Options

So as some of you know, my car is getting painted right now. I dropped it off 3 weeks ago to have it repaired and painted and when i went to get it yesterday, I noticed some minor flaws. There were small spots where the paint got rubbed off and some small parts that weren't painted, really small though. The people who did the windshield obviously rubbed off some of the paint around the windshield so I don't blame the shop for that since they get other people to do the windshield.

But the car was dirty so I couldn't see everything. I went back today and wiped some dust off and guess what, I could see the pin striping through the paint. WTF is that, obviously they did a bullsh!t sand job. Then I looked over at the front left fender where the moulding used to be near the wheel, but I took it off before it got painted, and a small piece of leftover glue was painted. Obviously that was barely sanded too. Also, the front lip was scratched from the curb cause some moron there who moved the car can't drive. I thought that was it, but guess what else I saw when I rubbed off some more dust... the car is TWO DIFFERENT COLORS!!! The trunk, doors, fenders, hood, and bumper are all gunmetal. The rest of the car is gunmetal with a hint of green. I talked to the manager and I'm getting the car re-painted. So why is this a good mistake? Because even though I have to wait even longer, most of the car will be getting two coats of paint now instead of one, except for the small parts they messed up on. Btw, I'm getting this done at Maaco, I know, I know, flame on.

oh FYI macco hardly ever sands i doubt they have 2 square feet of sand paper in their shop....
they dont' primer either

I dunno, the thing is when I called a bunch of paint shops I found in the Yellow Pages a while ago, I asked them what kind of warranty they offer and most of them had an equal warranty or less. Obviously those shops produce higher quality work, but some of them can't back it up with longer warranties. Besides, my celi is worth about $3500, no sense in spending the same amount on paint.

two words.....macco sucks.......thats just the way they are...i never recomend that people go there......but with all that said and done...good luck and hope it looks better this time around

Maaco jobs will last the warrenty period, it's just you get exactly what you've described -- no prep work, and ugly applications.

Then a couple years down the road, when your warrenty runs out, you get the other half of the Maaco bargain when the paint ages at a 10-1 ratio to factory.

Unfortunately, speaking from experience -- prior owner painted her with Maaco shortly before I bought her.

Yeah, unfortunately my car has 1. the bad Toyota paint on the roof, and 2. a maaco job on the passenger side from when the car was keyed. so the car is going to look like butt here in a year or so, hopefully i can do a half-ass job myself. i figure that's better than maaco at least

It's largely in the prep work. The paint technique, from the discussions I've had with body guys, can be learned quickly, but refining those techniques can take a lifetime.

do yourself a favor .. prep the car this time before you take it in. it doesn't matter that its 2 coats instead of one, they obviously screwed you on the prep work, so its not going to last. sand it down, remove parts, and even mask it out if you can. otherwise its gonna be a crap job regardless

so here is the question: what company charges 500-600 bucks for a decent paint job? my last paint was 1200 at maaco and there is no way I am taking my car back to them.

I have a friend that got his car painted at maaco and about a year later its all faded and doesnt even look like it ever got painted. my paint job was 1800 cuz i knew a guy, and I am loving it everyday

My new paintjob (which will not be done untill the begin of october ) will cost me about 1500. I will help with sanding and taking parts apart.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Here's my plan for now, go to Maaco when they open on Tuesday and tell them that they need to sand all the way down past my stock color on the entire car. And then they have to paint the whole thing again. Otherwise, if they dont agree to it, I pay them for fixing my dents/rust and don't give them any money for the paint job and go to some other place. Anybody have any better ideas? By the way, I work too much to prep the car myself so that's pretty much out of the question.

Earl Schieb, my gf took her car in there, got a hella deal..6 year warranty, fixed dents, change of color, with clear coat for 500 bucks.. it came out pretty good for the price and it was a 2 day turnaround.

I just went to their website and they have a coupon on there for a 6 year warranty paint job for $330, original price is $500. And they supposedly do a base coat and couple coats of paint and actually sand the car, so looks like i'm going there.

Odd....everything I've heard about Earl Schieb = Maaco.

Frankly, I wouldn't care to put a $330 paintjob on my car -- and they're still making money off that. Properly, $330 wouldn't pay for the prep labour hours.

I think I might go look around at some real paint shops, but does anyone think I can get it done for $1000 or less?

If you do all the prep work -- disassembly, sanding, etc. -- maybe, as long as you go for a basic job of colour + clear, and not go for a colour change.
