I have a '97 Celica GT with a factory stock airbox and rubber tube connecting to the throttle body. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that there is an odd shaped box connected to the underside of the stock intake tube about 5" above the airbox. The intake tube and the strange box seemed to be connected by a very short tube comming off the bottom of the intake tube. Any ideas on what this box is for? And if I were to replace the stock intake with a short ram aftermarket intake, would this pose any complication. Thanks for ya'lls help!

Hi, The plastic box is a noise reducer.....

Its suppost to quieten down the noise from the Manifold.

Some people say it does make a difference to performance if you remove it,
Some people claim that by installing a larger one you get a little more Kw out of the engine.

Either way just remeber that a ram pod only works well if it gets cold air & no radient heat from the engine..otherwise you actually loose a little power & suck more gas/fuel....

I would suggest you look into getting your hands on a larger airbox from a larger vehicle and wrapping it in heat proof foil or heat deflecting tape and use a good quality high flow filter. This way you still get an increased filter area that your engine can suck more air through, but keeps the heat out.

Also if you can install a cold air intacke pipe from outside the engine bay into the box you can force cold air into the filter.
It must be facing forward on the car - I have mine coming out from under the car facing forward - so when your moving it pushed air into the filterbox..

See -> Injen Intake HELP! topic in this forum. I put a few suggestions on how to install a 3inch cold air intake tot he filter. Hope this helps.

Cheers
