Ok so Im going snowboarding for the 1st time this Friday. Im scared! Im going with Jason and he hasnt been for 2 years so he should be pretty close to where i am. I wanna go on the chairlifts that day so i need some pointers on how to get off! i dont wanna fall (i know it will happen)
And what do i need gear wise? Im renting board and boots - though I want my own but no use in buying it before i try it! I already have a Helly Hanson Jacket and a pimp snow hat! ;-) Im going to buy Pants Goggles Gloves Anything else? -------------------- Cruisin down the street in my Infiniti...always lookin for my next trip to Sin City

you need to get snowboarding lessons and you'll also need oniment for the bruises, and bandaids for cuts etc. and some sorta neck support so you wouldn't break your neck

lol get on the beginners slope first
just balance ur whole body out and relax...keep the knees bended a lil'. when getting off the lift just aim ur board straight and sliiiidddeeee off...then u'll most likely fall but it's all part of the learning process! i love snowboarding! bboy edit: u'll fall ALOT btw...but why do we fall? so we can learn to pick ourselves back up. Alright, 12 years boarding, only took a lesson after 5 years (oh yeah, big mistake).
1st tip, gettin off the lift. Sit on the end of the lift. If you are goofy, the right, normal - the left. 2ndt tip, take a 1 hour semi-private lesson. 3rd tip, wear vollyball kneepads under your ski pants (you look like less of a wuss/newbie with them under your ski pants). 4th tip, never go on a bunny hill, go in intermediate hills. You need to be on edges, if you are not on edge, you are on the flat and will catch an edge (this is not a maybe, you will catch an edge if you ride your board flat). 5th tip, don't panic. Your fear will cause you to lean back, this will cause your edge to stick hard and you will not be able to slide out the back end of your board. If you lean more forward, you can slide out the back end of the board allowing you to scrub off speed slowing down, so don't panic. Good luck, it's a blast. btw, Vallo- I don't snowboard because it is cool, it is not a fad, it is not about fasion. When you have cut fresh tracks on the Rubybowl at Blackcomb, you will understand. A powder day is better than sex. |

It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside. |

Nat I am a skiier but have tried snowboarding, don't go on small beginer slopes snowboards seem to edge more if there isn't a harder slope. Always remember real virgins bleed. It's a lot of fun. Just swing ur back leg and pitch it to the inside you'll be fine. Also liquid courage never hurts. Indeed i do, well did. I thought the magazine went under a lil while back. Ive got one of thier magazines in my hand that says "The death of freeze" on it and it says its the last issue. |

i hate novice snowboarders...all they do is stay on their edge the entire way down and leave a trail of ICE behind. But good luck

Two words: wrist braces.
You're going to either be landing on your backside or your hands (sometimes both at the same time) -- and it's no fun to break a wrist. |

You will need a leash for your board or they will not let you on the lift. Attempt to stretch before you start, but it doesn't matter, the next day you will be so sore you won't want to move. How I taught myself was going up on a steep run, sitting down, and then when you stand up just try and stay almost parallel with the mountain. This will make going on the Heel (or toe, depending on which is most comforable) a whole lot easier and come naturally. If you want to move around from that point just put more force on the foot that you want to lead. Hope you have fun. Are you going to Snoqualmie or Crystal?

Hey Natalie, do you know if you're stance is Regular or Goofy?! If not here's a way to determine. If you were to by slightly pushed from behind which foot is the first to brace yourself? If it's the left then your a Regular (left foot forward on board and right legt is your trail leg), if it's your right then you're Goofy (right foot fwd and left foot is the trail leg).
The reason why I ask is because sometimes it helps determine where you should sit on the lift when your friend might have an opposite stance as you. That way you both won't be running into each other when getting off. *Make sure your trail leg is unstrapped and out of the binding before getting onto the lift* Tips for getting off the lift. 1. Be prepared. Usually at the last pole prior to the exit ramp scooch yourself slightly up towards the end of the chair and tip the front of your board up a little. You don't want that front tip to get caught and heavin forbid you fall off the lift. 2. Use the pole, the edge of seat or the corner of the arm rest as a guide to push you off the lift as you exit. This will help stabilize you as you push yourself off the lift. 3. Use the track that usually paved for you to guide you off. Usually there's nothing you can do to avoid this because it's already usually carved in there from the previous boarders/skiiers. 4. Try to just HEAD STRAIGHT the first time. Within time you'll learn to manuever yourself to turn straight out of the exit ramp. 5. Don't be embarrassed. Everyone was a noob at one point. Falling is ok. Just make sure to get out of the way for the oncomimg people getting off the lifts. GOOD LUCK NATALIE!! You'll be ok! -Christee- |

i would strongly strongly strongly suggest you take a lesson. Ive been teaching snowboarding for 4 years and your first time will be a whole lot better if you shell out for a group lesson.

^ Tis true. You will learn a whole lot faster when you have someone telling you how to do it, rather than you falling and trying to learn. Just take an hour or two lesson.. I mean.. you have all day to snowboard.
