i hear that starting your car is the equivalent of letting your car idle for about 3 minutes or so, and by equivalent i mean the amount of gas being used. Has anyone else heard of this? Or if it is true?

QUOTE(Terzin1 @ Dec 18, 2005 - 7:59 PM) i hear that starting your car is the equivalent of letting your car idle for about 3 minutes or so, and by equivalent i mean the amount of gas being used. Has anyone else heard of this? Or if it is true? thats not true. i forgot what it was on tv but they did some tests and it's actually better on gas to turn off your car when your at a red light than to let it idle. i doubt anybody does this, but still. i mean, i doubt it makes a difference at all. i just drive and not think about things like that because it's not worth it and it'll probably give me a headache.-------------------- |

i'm not sure if that's true.... but i would guess not.
i'd agree to something more like: "starting your car is equivalent to 15 secs of idle" -------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

so now i feel better about letting my car run period. it can idle all it wants now because now i can afford it |

I dont think that is true.
But if you were to keep turning your car off and on. Your starter motor will go pretty soon too. So in my opinion it's not worth it. -------------------- 98 ST204 ZR - Black Beauty - Roaming the streets of Sydney 73 TA22 LT - Tiffany Blue - Mint Classic Weekend Cruiser 75 TA22 LT - Snow White - Mint Classic Weekend Cruiser 77 RA28 LT - Flubber Green - Mint Classic Weekend Cruiser 94 MX-5 NA8 Clubman - Red Racer - Looking for corners WIP Project: 69 RT40 Corona, 2nd WIP Project: 66 RT40 1600s Corona 86 Corona RT142 - Daily Driver 6GC 4 Life Baby!!! |

it is true that during start your bearings incurr more wear then anytime while running (that is in the engines operational range). And ya you would burn out your starter and in heavy city driving you could kill your battery depending on how close the lights are being it draws the most power of any part of the system (that is other then large stereo systems, I think)

on a cold start you fuel usage is like the same as 5 min's idel on a warm engin..... if the motors warm then it's not worth thinking about.... but wear and tear on the starter will increase....
as for petrol i'm paying @ 60 cents a liter for 98....... in gallons.... sorry thick this morning -------------------- Life is for living, and you don't get a second chance Take care now !! |

i let my car warm up 5 minutes before moving, and 3-5 minutes before stop engine to warm down turbo bearings. so a turbo car owner pays twice .

all that happens when you start a car cold, is that the 5th cold start injector fires to help the starting process.
i understand not having enough money to go take a long trip because of gas prices, but being too cheap to start your car is kind of sad...lol . -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned
i agree... though i will turn my car off at a light that is taking too long to turn green Lagos do you let your car "idle down" to cool the turbo? and yes its sad... but gas for meis like 2.26 i use 93 octane...usually bp only but shell is way cheaper bp is like almost 2.40 for premium This post has been edited by easternpiro1: Dec 21, 2005 - 3:51 PM -------------------- |

Starting the car is like priming the engine first. U will use only a small amount of it to make the car start up. Too much kills it. Idle the car is like feeding it to run after priming it. so I guesss idling the car uses more gas cause all 4 cylinders are being used at once. When you prime u use only 1 or 2 cylinders to start it going.
