Hi, has anyone taken out the A/C unit and replaced it with an alternator? If so how difficult was this job and how much did it cost?

I am running two alpine amps 1 at 1000 watts @ 2ohms and 1 at 4 X 100 watts at 4ohms. Alpine amps like most digital amps need to a 14Volt supply to run at full output. I have 2 caps and a heavy battery but with my neon’s and AV setup my voltage drops to 9V!! the cost of the extra alternator is about the same if not less than an up rated high output alt to replace the one I have.
I have seen a number of cars which have had a 2nd alt fitted to a completely separate power circuit just for the amps. The sound is just so much better, don’t get me wrong my sounds are good but I cannot sustain high volumes without the amps clipping after 10 minutes. With heaters and lights all the power gets used up and the sound clarity goes. I am surprised that you guys have not heard of this as it is very common here? -------------------- |

I've heard of it and I know the benefits. I think an uprated alternator would be easier because then you wouldnt have to redo your wiring. Contact dustin15brown about them. I think they're 140Amp.

What gauge wire are you running for your power?
Doesnt sound as though you need a second alternator. Heavy battery? Maybe change it to an optima or something. |

Personally I HATE optima batteries, with the system I used to have I would go through them in 9-11 months. I then switched to stinger batteries(one now) and it made a BIG difference, Also when I had the Optima batteries I had to replace the alternator as often as the batteries. If you need that much more power I recommend a stinger battery especially if your amps are unregulated(more voltage=more watts) because with the stinger battery with my car off it still had a 15.?? float charge still. I do need the extra power. I never use the AC so it is worth me taking it off for a 2nd alternator, I use all the right wire and fuse specs all the way through the car. I am told that its all down to OHMS law. more current equals more volts and more watts. I have changed the alternator but the volts do run down over time.

I'm telling you, it will be a pain to swap in another alternator. You'll most likely need a custom bracket. Contact dustin15brown about an upgraded alternator. I think they're 160AMPs. Thats like having 2 alternators.

it will infact take a customn bracket. i have had it looked into. I was gonna run 2 of the 140amp alternators. i was tring to run 2 XS100 on 4 CVR 15s with each amp at 1/2 ohm. i ran out of money and the set up went into a astro van.

i think i hi-amp alternator is a MUCH better, and in the end, cheaper option.
