Well I am trying to install a new exhaust on my 94 celica Gt model and when I pulled the downpipe off the exhaust manifold I was surprised to see honey comb material in the exhaust manifold, like you would see in a catalytic converter????? Is the cat. located right next to the exhaust manifold on this car? If not what is this???? I don't have a cat anywhere else in my exhaust system.

-If this is the cat. I want it gone. Can you just punch out the honeycomb material and run it hollow or do you need to replace the cat. *if it is the cat.* with a straight pipe?????

-I don't have the heat shield off yet so I am not aware of how this is bolted together any ideas???? Thanks....

Two cats thats a crazy amount of extra exhaust restriction!!!

-Well does this motor need that much backpressure to run appropriately????

-I have owned a few other 4 cylinders and they all had only one cat. and they all ran better with it gone.

-Now has anyone gutted out the one in the exhaust manifold and ran it hollow or will this seriously mess with back pressure????

-It looks like a pain to take off and remove the honeycomb material, I was thinking of punching it from the bottom up with it still on the car, but this may not work......

-Basically I have to halt this project until I get a bunch of advice on what to do with this cat????? So please give me some info. cause this is my daily driver and it currently has no exhaust!!!!

the cats are there not for perforance reason, the cats are designed to clean the exhaust, Save the earth, and prevent little childern from having Asthma.

yeah thats just flex pipe covering the cat. I guess if you take the cat out you dont really need the flex pipe, it is welded on though, so make sure you want it gone for sure or you'll have to pay someone to weld on a new one..... sadly i've actually done that... it cost me $125 CAD... that sucks.

Actually the flex pipe is just that a flex pipe at the end of the downpipe that lets the exhaust system flex when the engine moves slightly when you get on the gas. *I have built a few exhaust systems myself and have a welder* But I have never run into a car with two cats and a resonator and a muffler!!!!!!!!!!

-I am talking about the exhaust manifold up by the motor, it bolts directly to a big round *pipe* for lack of a better word that is actually a catalytic converter.

-Has anyone removed this piece or hollowed it out? HOw did it affect your mileage or power.

-NOw when you put a header on this piece has to go so, I don't think hollowing it out would be so bad from a performance point of view. I just don't want to lose my good mileage......

Hey, I did it. I took it off and punched it out. The car only has one cat btw. Some shops, and even the book will tell you otherwise, but I've been in there and I know. There is a resinater just infront of the back wheels. This can be mistaken for a cat. I took it off too. When I punched out my cat, it was very easy. That crap comes right out of there. I think I ended up with a leak after though. Make sure you can get the gaskets before you go at it. I didn't really notice much gains in mpg. I noticed a very little gain in high rpm. When you take it off and punch it out, you'll see how much it will screw with the path way of the air. I don't know if I would do this again. I've got a header setting in my trunk right now, and I made a flange yesturday, and I'm going to put it on and have full 2.25inch strate pipe made for it. Gutting the cat is a fun experiance, but I'm not sure it's really worth the time/effort/money for a performance mod. You're call though. If you just feel like doing something, go for it.

Well I have searched this topic for over an hour now on this forum and haven't been able to come up with a definite answer to my question. Apparentlly the guys overseas see a definite improvement, possibly due to their different motor?
-What I would really like to see is a picture of the cat. that is located by the exhaust manifold, seperated from the rest of the exhaust so I can see what it would take to make a pipe to fit in its place..... Anyone have any pics of this piece????? Taken out of the vehicle..... THanks....

Yes I did. Here in WV, if your OBD1, they don't check emitions. They make sure you have a cat, but other than that, they don't care. I'm not sure about other states.

I wanted to do this after I took mine apart. I think you'll just have to open it up for the measurements. It's definately possible. I didn't do it because I was just to lazy to mess with it, and it was going to take another day of work because I didn't have a car to drive. I would have had to wate on a ride so I could get the parts I needed for it. I would really recommend doing this if your going to put a pipe in there.

Well I have decided to buy a used cat that bolts onto the exhaust manifold and gut it and then run a pipe through it to keep the exhaust flowing as it should. It looks way too difficult to make a tube to replace the cat seeing how weird it mounts to the exhaust manifold the whole looks huge!!! However, I can't find a junk cat that mounts to the exhaust manifold on a 2.2 litered celica. Does anyone have one I could buy for cheap..
bdogg_v@hotmail.com
-I have come to the conclusion that the sound I want simply cannot be achieved with that bloody thing mounted right to the motor...... It muffles the sound too much for my taste.......

How soon you need it? I'll have one avalible here some time in the near future. I'll be ditching mine for a header. It's already gutted too.

I have the header, I just need to put it on. I need to get a Y pipe made that's bent. It's going to be a trick to make what I want. I'm putting 2.25 inch exhaust on while I'm at it. I'll have it avalible on the weekend of good friday, I think. I've had it for awhile, and things keep going wrong to keep me from putting it on.
