If any one knows please post, thanks 3.9 Quarts. That's just for the 5sfe, the 2.2 liter. The 7afe (1.8liter), can't have exactly the same requirements. Just fill it up till it's full, and no more. Any extra and you will blow gaskets. A quart per liter is crazy advice. It scares me to think there are people out there that believe that and stick with it with motors. I could end up buying a car off someone like that. Well, it is close. But I had a car that was a 1.8 4 cylinder and it only took about 3 quarts. If I would have put 4 in, it would have blown out all over the place. Like I said before, just fill it till it's full. I'm sorry for ripping on ya there LewFX. We have all said things that were pretty far from true before. And usually it's because we ourselves have been told something like that. I just want people to know it's not a good rule to follow at all. -------------------- Live Free, Be Happy

This info should be in your Owners Manual if you still have it. The GT with a filter is 4.1 US quarts, and the the ST is probably 0.2 or 0.3 less.

^^I wouldn't think that a 4afe 1.6 would take more oil than a 7afe 1.8. Odd

I put in just about 4 quarts and then run it, then check again (filter fills up) and it takes about another 1/4 quart, so mine is like 4.3 with filter.. strange..
(no I am not OVER filling, as the dipstick would indicate if I was..) -------------------- 1991 MR2 - T-tops - Crimson Red - Gen3 3SGTE - Lots of money

(no I am not OVER filling, as the dipstick would indicate if I was..) I've been taught not to start them without the filter being full first. Without it, the car will start dry, and run that way for a second or two. Every time you change your oil, is it on a flat surface? With my Celica, I've noticed that the slightest change in angle can lead to inaccurate dip stick readings. -------------------- Live Free, Be Happy

Could the angle of the 5S cause that? Cause it looks as though it sits at an angle, but that could just be the head that sits that way.
also, I change my oil on jack stands, usually on all 4 corners to I can go about doing a visual check of everything, so I would assume this would give me somewhat of a level surface. -------------------- 1991 MR2 - T-tops - Crimson Red - Gen3 3SGTE - Lots of money

Why would gaskets blow? if there is more oil then needed it will just stay in the pan. + if car has too much oil it will be wented into the air-intake and then burned in the pistons. Well I put around 4 quart of oil into my car today, should be fine. -------------------- <<AKA THA RUSSIAN>>

A few basics: Oil capacity is determined by the capacity of the oil pan sump and oil filter, and any other optional devices such as a cooler or accusump, if equipped. If a larger-than-stock filter is utilized, more oil will be required. Obviously, oil capacity varies from engine type to engine type. Larger engines generally take more oil, but sometimes not. It just depends on the design.
Regardless, the factory dipstick marking is the standard. If it indicates the oil level is high, it is. The side effects of overfilling the pan vary in degree, based on how much over full. Under normal conditions, the crankshaft does not come in contact with the oil in the sump. When over full, the crankshaft counterweights do come in contact with sump oil and will churn it, causing foaming. The foam is light enough to be picked up and carried into the positive crankcase ventilation system, which means, as mentioned above, oil will begin to collect in or near the air cleaner and often be ingested into the engine, with the possibility of fouling the spark plugs. If only slightly over full, this condition is self correcting, once the extra oil is burned away. In a grossly over full engine, the crankshaft will throw so much oil toward the bottom of the cylinders the oil (bottom) rings are deluged and are unable to control oil on the cylinder walls, and oil ends up in the cylinders, making the engine smoke like a bandit, and really wetting the spark plugs. Although I have not seen it, in theory, under these extreme conditions, the crankcase pressure could become high enough (normally the crankcase is neutral or under vacuum) to blow a valve cover or oil pan gasket. I have seen the oil dipstick pop out of the tube, but Toyota gaskets are quite superior and really hang in there. Also, oil filters on many Japanese engines mount horizontally, preventing us from pre-filling them. When the engine is started, it certainly isn't dry but it is unpressurized until the oil pump fills the filter, in less than 5 seconds. A genuine Toyota oil filter has a check valve which keeps it full each time the engine stops. I only use Toyota filters because one "dry" start every 3000 miles is better than a "dry" start every time. |
