Okay, with the ignition system, i kno the cap is simple enuff to replace. But what about the rotor/distibutor? How would i go about swapping a new one in?
I have also heard that if they aren't adjusted propery, the timing will be WAY off. kindasad.gif


I've noticed recently that it's extremely hard for me to shift in to first gear. It doesn't ALWAYS do that. It's just there's times when the light turns green and it refuses to go into first so i have to start off in 2nd. mad.gif
I think the problem lies with my shift cables. Where would i get new ones from? and is it hard to replace them?


i appreciate any input, folks.

the rotor is just as easy as the cap...actually its easier
its just under the cap when you take it off and you just pull it out and stick the new one in the same way, its tiny

thats all i know biggrin.gif
[and if thats wrong then i did it wrong and it still works fine]

If it won't shift into first, move the shifter to neutral, release your clutch pedal momentarily, press it back in and try shifting to first again. Mine does the same thing with reverse sometimes. I don't recommend launching in second gear.

Also, buy the Haynes 86-99 Celica repair book (20 bucks or so at your local parts store). Aside from working in a tight engine compartment it is a very easy procedure to change the distributor cap, rotor button, spark plug wires and spark plugs (may as well do them all at once). Also, as long as you don't loosen the adjustment screw (see the manual on this one), nothing changes when you install the new distributor cap. As long as you just remove the bolts holding the cap on, remove the rotor button, put a new one on and install the new distributor cap, the timing will not change. If you feel like checking your timing you can get a timing light and after you've installed the new stuff just loosen the adjustment bolt and rotate the distributor cap one way or the other to change the timing slightly.

okay, thanks guys.

i didn't kno you could just pull the rotor out and put the new one in. I had the timing checked back when i replaced the timing belt/water pump, etc. so i didn't wanna screw it up.

and 94GT, i DO put it in neutral and let up the clutch then try again. sometimes THAT doesn't even work. like i said, this only happens occassionally, so i dunno...

I would recommend everything 94 GT suggested. Especially the manual. I have all kinds of manuals in my garage because I have bought one for almost every vehicle I have ever owned. The manual is probably the most valuable tool you will have. In fact, I believe I have three for Celicas. I am not sure of the year ranges. If you are interested, I can mail one to you COD. I'll check the model years tonight but I think I may have you covered. I'm only concerned with paying for the postage.

The only other suggestion I have is to check the timing with the light before you even loosen the distrubutor nut. In many cases it is already fine.
