Im curious who people think the best guitar players of our time are?..IE like mid 80s + as most people on the site are mid 20s or younger.

My vote is a 3 way tie. I would have to say Ingwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde, or Alexi Laho

If you have never heard any of them before, here are links to videos of them playing.

Malmsteen playing "Far Beyond the Sun"
Crazy Malmsteen...watch all of it

Zakk Wylde who is an insperation for me. He was a little scronney kid growing up who got picked on all the time for being different..like i was. Then just found somethin he liked alot, like listening to Ozzy when he was a kid, played guitar and idolized Tony Iomi and just kept playing. Then when he was 19, Ozzy was touring the states looking for a guitar player for his band, and Wylde auditioned and has been playing with Ozzy since 87 or so.

Zakk Wylde playing Star Spangled Banner at L.A. Kings Game

Alexi Laho is the guitarist/lead singer from C.O.B. ...or if your not into the european metal thing, Children of Bodom. new age metal band from Finland. This clip is from a side project he did with some one from Dimmu Borgir...if you dont know them..dont ask..lol

Synergy - Suicide by my side *viewer discreation advised*

wait for the solo about 3 min into the song.

Your votes please...

ooh, also a tie. unfortunately, no videos. i just suggest looking each artist up.

robert fripp (original king crimson, also with brian eno, adrain belew, and david sylvian at points)

danny gatton (un-friggin real. maybe the telecaster twang isn't your thang, but you have to respect how well the guy can play. just amazing. i'll try and dig up a vid or mp3)

steve vai (the dude practically invented half of the techniques he uses)

finally, jeff beck (you listen to "freeway jam" and tell me this guy isn't incredible. seriously)

Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Jeff Beck, pretty much everyone listed above

i used to think Carlos Santana was pretty good but haven't heard any of his music in a while

a personal favorite is the combination of Matt Bachand & Jon Donais from Shadows Fall.

here's a video of the guy whom i think might be the best all-arounder of our generation. maybe it's not your style, that's cool. but you have to watch how fast, clean, and inventively this guy plays, er, played. skip to like 12:10 in the vid and you'll see what i'm talking about. disregard the horrible 90'ss fashion and hair.

guitar players, you know it.

Tom Morello is pretty crazy too. Hes really good at just creating weird sounds from his guitar, but not really complicated. Yes, he can make his guitar sound like a turn tabel scratching, but you dont see him out there playing stupid complicated riffs and solos that make your head explode

Dimebag was a big influence on metal. And a crazy guitar player too. My best friend has the Cowboys from Hell logo tattooed on his back in memory of Dimebag.

*POP*...that was the sound of my head exploding. That guy is rediculus. The second video just made my head hurt from trying to figure out how the hell he can do that.

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.

Slash
John Petrucc of dreamtheater

if you guys wanna hear some of my stuff: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=383346

The only sound clips I recommend listening to are: gtjamtrack*may, and sometimes. the other ones pretty much suck.

Sometimes was a song I completely wrote myself, the song was meant to have lyrics, but I'm no singer tongue.gif so if it feels like it drags on... just wait for the solo, lol. and the GT jam tracks are from a site like this, except about guitars instead of celicas, they have a monthly contest where they put up a backing track, and a bunch of people do a solo over it and then people vote on who had the best solo. the june one was a jazz song, and i SUCK at jazz... so I'd not listen to it if I were you. and the july one is blues, which I also suck at. the august one, which I haven't done yet is a shred-type metal one, so I might try to get that done tomorrow.

I will warn you all though, my recording equipment sucks, so that's why my tone is hella bad... listen to me play live if you want to hear my good tones wink.gif
